Toui introduced into ornamental gardening for a long time. These are evergreen and most often thermophilic representatives of the family Cypress. Slender trees and dwarf shrubs are actively used in landscaping parks, city alleys and private gardens. Two types are most known: thuja folded and western. It's about the plant of the first kind. In nature, it is common from the sunny shores of California and to Alaska, but in our climate it is more demanding to care.

Botanical description

Folded thuja are sometimes also called giant, and among informal names, Canadian or western red cedar are especially popular. The natural area of growth is large enough. It is a slender tree up to 75 cm high and with a trunk girth up to 1.2-2.4 m. The crown is conical or pyramidal in shape, the branches are located in a horizontal plane, and the shoots slightly wilted. The brown-red bark 1-2.5 cm thick has many cracks. The shoots are flat, covered with leaves with a glossy green outer surface and a whitish bottom. The tree forms large bumps up to 12 cm long, oval-oblong in shape.

Site and soil

The tree is wind-resistant and shade-tolerant, long-liver with a life expectancy of 500 to 800 years. Thuja can develop normally in sunny areas and in partial shade. In the first case, there is a risk that the tree will suffer from changes in day and night temperatures, dehydration will begin. Under natural conditions, thuja folded grows on wet coasts, in marshy lowlands, where it reaches a truly gigantic size. The soil is not demanding, but for better development should be prepared nutrient soil. Experts recommend for planting to mix sand, peat, sheet or sod land in a ratio of 1: 1: 2.

Thuja folded: planting and caring for seedlings

There is no unequivocal opinion about the planting time of seedlings, but it is worth bearing in mind that during the spring planting the plant will have time to get cold. The size of the landing pit depends on the size of the tree, the minimum depth is 80 cm, the bottom is filled with a drainage layer (15-20 cm). When planting, leave a distance of 1-3 m between plants when forming a hedge and up to 5 m to create an alley. The root neck cannot be buried; it should be left at ground level. During the first month after planting the tree is recommended to be watered once a week, the volume of water is 10 liters, and also to sprinkle (sprinkle) in the early morning or evening hours in order to avoid sunburn.

Growing thuja

Further care of the plant consists in weeding the near-stem circle from the weeds, loosening it to a depth of no more than 10 cm, since the root system is located close to the surface, and mulching the soil (with bark, pebbles, chips, etc.). Thuja folded (description and photo in the text) is sensitive to lack of moisture. With a constant lack of water, the crown begins to thin, and the needles turn yellow. Therefore, in the dry summer the tree needs to be watered abundantly (15-20 l) 2 times a week. If the planting was made complex mineral fertilizer, then the following feeding should be carried out only after 2 years. Use, for example, the drug "Kemira Universal" at the rate of 100-120 g per 1 sq.m.

Annually in the spring, remove dry shoots and cut (if necessary) within reasonable limits. Shorten shoots longer than 1/3 are not recommended. Adult plants in the Moscow climate survive the winter quite easily; young plants should be sheltered in the first 2-3 years.

Thuja folded: decorative forms

Within the framework of the natural species, it is customary to distinguish between a folded mountain (or eastern) and coastal. The first prefers a warm climate, and the second - a continental. In the decorative park culture, plants are divided into three forms depending on the external features.

  • Thuja plicata f. Atrovirens is one of the most spectacular pyramidal evergreen trees. The glossy foliage of a rich dark green color is harmoniously underlined by a reddish-brown wrinkled bark. It grows to 6-7.6 m, develops slowly, lives up to 80 years.
  • Thuja plicata f. Pendula (photo above) - a very spectacular thuja (folded), highly decorative form with a characteristic weeping crown. The shrub is sprawling, it grows slowly and at the age of 10 reaches 1.8-4.5 m, for a year the shoots give an increase of up to 30 cm. The branches are drooping, curved, the needles are bright green in summer and with a grayish tint in winter.
  • Thuja plicata f. Fastigata - has a flat columnar crown. The tree reaches a height of 12 m. The crown spread is from 2-3 m to 3-3.6 m. The soil is undemanding, relatively winter-hardy.

One of the most decorative varieties that are widespread in park culture is the thuja folded Gelderland with a cone-shaped fluffy crown. High decorative effect is achieved due to the dense needles of rich dark green color and bright bronze color in winter. For 10 years, the plant reaches a height of 5 m. Relatively hardy, but in cold regions requires shelter for the winter.

Thuy attract their dense crown, the aroma of pine needles and clear forms of the crown. This is a very valuable material for landscape gardening. They are used in single and group plantings, as a living wall, for the formation of alleys. In the thuja garden, folded (photo above) is well combined with other conifers (Eastern spruce, European larch), with cypress, zsugoy.

Thuja folded: description

The plant is an evergreen tree or shrub that has a dense crown. It is formed mainly due to shoots branched in one plane. In the natural environment, the plant can reach an average height of up to 60 m. The diameter of the trunk in most specimens is about 2.5 m.

If the plant is cultivated, then it reaches a more modest height - no more than 15 m. Small trees stand out with a fluffy crown. They were bred specifically for the design of gardens and parks. In the conditions of the Russian climate, they are less hardy than the more popular variety of western Tui.

The trunk of the thuja folded covered with a fibrous crown, which has a reddish-brown hue. It is because of this feature that this tree is often called red cedar. Another unofficial name is western red cedar. His crown is quite thick, often characterized by a pyramidal shape. The leaves of the plant are very narrow. Their width rarely exceeds 1 mm. As they grow, they overlap, acquiring a gloss with a characteristic gloss on the front surface. On the reverse side of the leaves there are pronounced strips of white.

This variety is distinguished by oval-oblong fruits. They are presented in the form of cones, whose length reaches approximately 12 cm. In two fruits, two seeds are most often located. They are quite flat, have two wings.

Thuja folded: photo, landing and care

Despite the fact that this plant is not very whimsical to the conditions of growth, its care is still required to follow certain rules. Folded thuja, planting and care is very simple, can grow both in the shade and in direct sunlight. It is advisable to use a well-drained soil with a high percentage of moisture. With dry ground, the growth of the tree will be noticeably slower, it will be more difficult for it to grow. In such conditions, the crown of the plant will begin to thin noticeably. The rest of the young specimens are quite stable.

Irrigation rates are determined by the condition of the soil. If it is sufficiently moist, you can skip the watering. However, it should be borne in mind that in the summer it is impossible to prevent excessive drying of the soil. Some experts recommend watering at least once every 10 days. This is the most optimal period for an adult tree or shrub. One copy takes at least 10 liters of water. In the evening, the crown of the plant can be sprayed. It is extremely not recommended to do this in the afternoon when the sun shines strongly. If the seedlings are still young, then the procedure is preferably carried out daily.

In winter, this plant is able to withstand a temperature drop of up to - 30 ° C. However, severe frosts can have a bad effect on the condition of the thuja, therefore it is still recommended to grow it in a relatively protected from low temperatures and wind places. As a fertilizer, you can use complex mineral supplements, which are designed for coniferous trees.

Thuja varieties that are colored rather variegated should be grown in well-lit places, otherwise the plants will quickly lose their decorative effect. In too dark areas, their needles will quickly become dull.

What are the varieties?

Today there are several varieties of thuja folded. Each of them has its own characteristics and stands out for its high aesthetic value. Due to their typical forms, they look equally great both in groups and alone. The following varieties are distinguished:

  1. The name thuja folded Wipcord comes from the English name "Whipcord", often used in scientific literature. The translation of this word sounds like “twine”, which perfectly characterizes this variety, which is distinguished by filamentary shoots.
  2. Thuja folded Gelderland has a bush shape. Her crown is developing rapidly. Instances of more than 10 years of age often reach heights of up to 4 m. The crown of this variety has a glossy surface. In winter, it acquires a bronze tint.
  3. Thuja folded cancan is a small tree. Adult plants reach a height of 1.2 meters. This is a fairly cold-resistant variety that is not picky about growing conditions. However, even in the most favorable environment, its growth remains slow.
  4. The thuja folded Kornik is a rather powerful tree whose crown has a pyramidal shape. Its shoots are wide, the needles are bright green, the branches are short, hanging slightly at the ends. Plant under favorable conditions can grow up to 5 centuries. For rapid growth and normal formation of the plant requires a fertile and moist soil.
  5. Thuja folded Zebrin Extra Gold stands out for its rapid growth. The branches of this class are separated from each other. Due to the large and decorative needles, the tree is often used in landscaping gardens and parks. The name is due to the fact that in the summer and autumn period the plant is colored like a zebra - it is yellow with golden-green splashes.
  6. Thuja folded Forever Goldie. This variety is characterized by a cone-shaped crown. The needles of the plant are yellowish-green. Coloring persists even in winter. Most often used for the formation of various landscape compositions. Adult specimens reach a height of 2.5 meters. Their diameter does not exceed 1.5 meters. Growth rates are relatively average.

Practically all garden varieties of thuja are excellent for cutting. They can be given any shape and used to decorate garden areas. They are great for creating bright contrasts in compositions from various trees and shrubs.

Description and advantages of folded thuja

Under natural conditions, this tree can reach a height of 60 meters, and the diameter of its trunk - more than two meters. A cultivated plant can have a height of no more than 15 meters. In nature, it grows near rivers and seas, as well as on the shady slopes of the mountains. It is important to note that the giant thuja can live more than 750 years.

The crown of the ornamental shrub is rather thick, mostly it has the shape of a pyramid. Its main branches are located horizontally, they have narrow, green leaves, on the lower side of which there are whitish stripes. This variety is distinguished by fruits (cones) that are oblong oval in shape.

The ornamental plant has many advantages. These include:

  • growing fast
  • can grow even on poor soils
  • can adapt to the shade
  • not afraid of flooding
  • its wood is of great value
  • easy to breed.

Giant thuja varieties

There are several forms, they all have an attractive appearance. Dwarf shrubs look good on rocky terrain, weeping forms are best planted on lawns or near water bodies. From plants in which the needles have a variety of bright colors, you can create magnificent compositions in gardens and parks.

Thuja folded Vipkord. It is a dwarf variety of a plant, its height does not exceed one and a half meters. However, in natural conditions the tree can grow up to sixty meters in height. Whipcord has the form of a ball and is distinguished by lowered shoots. The needles are scaly, its ends are pointed. In the summer, it is green and in winter it becomes brown.

This is an unpretentious plant, it is planted in the spring, the soil should be moist and drained. Whipcord is frost-resistant, however, severe frosts can destroy it. In winter, it is best to warm and enclose it with a covered frame so that the snow does not break off the branches. It can be made independently, and can be purchased in specialized stores.

Thuja folded Gelderland. Shrub species of plants, which is characterized by rapid growth. At the age of ten his height can be four meters. The thick shiny crown has a conical shape, in the winter time of the year it acquires a bronze tint.

Thuja folded Foreva Goldie. Compact version, has a height of about one and a half meters. Conical crown with yellow-green needles.

Thuja folded Zebrina. It is characterized by slow growth, for a quarter of a century, thuja can grow only up to three meters. This species has a dense, low, variegated crown. The plant often suffers from frost and direct sunlight. He likes wet, drained soil, grows in nature in forests and marshes.

Thuja folded Atrovierens. The fast-growing variety, has a height of four meters. The needles are glossy, dark green.

Thuja folded Zebrina extra gold. The variety is distinguished by a yellow-green crown of conical shape. For ten years, the plant is able to reach a height of about two meters.

Thuja folded Kornik. Ornamental shrub with a pyramidal crown and bright, green needles, the ends of which have a golden color. It grows slowly, reaching a height of three meters by the age of ten. This plant can live for about five hundred years. This grade differs in frost resistance, and also they are steady against winds. Loves wet fertile soil.

Care features

Thuja folded does not require special care, however, it should still pay attention. Care includes:

  • timely removal of weeds,
  • soil loosening
  • soil mulching (grass, pebbles, tree bark),
  • shelter plants for the winter,
  • crown formation
  • pruning dry branches (spend it in early spring).

Conditions for growing thuja folded

Consider the conditions in which a plant can grow:

  1. She prefers sunny areas, but calmly applies to the penumbra. Varieties that are brightly colored may dim if the area is poorly lit.
  2. The plant often suffers from frost, but is able to withstand temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius below zero. For its cultivation suitable windless areas.
  3. In the hot season, it is necessary to water the plant. It is necessary to ensure that the soil does not dry out, since the crown may turn yellow and become much less common.
  4. Shrubs should be planted in a fertile, moist soil. It is necessary to feed it with mineral fertilizers for coniferous crops.

Planting thuya folded

In order for the plant to have time to get stronger by the winter season, it should be planted in the spring. The depth of the landing pit should be about one meter. Drainage is falling asleep at its bottom; the plant's root neck is not deeply deepened.

If thuja is planted to create a hedge, then the distance between the plants should be within three meters. If they create an alley, then the distance should be increased to five meters.

After planting, during the month, the plant is watered once every seven days, in dry areas irrigation should be done twice a week.

Transplant giant thuja tolerates well. Young trees are best transplanted in the spring season, and adult plants can be transplanted at any time of the year.

Breeding giant TUI

Under natural conditions, the plant multiplies seeds, which ripen in the autumn season.

Before sowing, seeds are kept in the water for about twelve hours, sown in the spring season. Garden varieties of thuja are propagated only by cutting. Cuttings should be taken from strong, preferably young plants.

Giant thuja has a thick crown of various forms, its needles exude a fresh, pleasant aroma. It is an evergreen decoration of gardens, parks and alleys. Its wood is very durable, it is appreciated by builders and is widely used in carpentry.

Thuja tree - description

Thuja are evergreen shrubs or trees, sometimes in nature reaching 70 m in height with a trunk diameter of 6 m. In thuja culture rarely grows above 11 meters. In young thujs, the needles are needle-like, soft, light green in color, and in adults, the leaves have a darker green shade, crosswise opposite, scaly. Thuys are monoecious plants, their fruits are oval or oblong cones with flat seeds that ripen in the first year. Thuja is indecent in care, it is smoke-resistant, cold-resistant, and a species such as thuja western, tolerates even cold winters.

  • When to plant thuja.

Before you plant thuyu, you need to choose a suitable site for it. Thuja is light-requiring, but from being in the sun for a whole day it dehydrates, and this leads to the fact that the thuja does not tolerate the winter. Therefore, the place for tui should be light, but in the midday hours the sun should not fall on it. In addition, thuja does not tolerate drafts. The soil for thuja is desirable nutrient - turfy ground with the addition of sand and peat, although thuja grows on less rich soils - in marshy, sandy and sandy soils. Thuja can be planted in spring or autumn; however, planting of thuja in autumn does not give confidence that the plant will have time to adapt in the open field before winter.

    How to plant thuja.

The size of the pit for thuja depends on the size of the seedling's root system - it should be 35-40 cm wider and 15-30 cm more in depth than the ground tui. If you plant several plants, the distance between them depending on the size of adult plants is kept from 1 to 5 m. When planting the thuja along the avenue, the distance between the seedlings is maintained at 3.5-4 m. A mixture of soil with a small amount of compost is placed on the bottom of the pit. well rotted manure. Roots of seedlings before planting should be held in a container with water until air bubbles stop coming out. After that, place the tree in the center of the hole, straighten the roots, make sure that the root neck is just above the soil level, fill the hole with a good soil mixture, carefully and carefully compact it, trying not to damage the base of the trunk, and pour the seedling at a rate of 1.5- 2 watering cans per plant. When the water is absorbed and the earth has slightly settled, grumble the tree trunk with chips, peat, compost or pine bark - the mulch will protect the roots of thuja from too hot or too cold weather and retain moisture in the soil for longer. However, do not allow the mulch to cover the stem or lower branches of the plant - they can snuff under the mulch.

    How to grow thuja.

Thuja is very responsive to watering, especially she likes sprinkling. In the first weeks after planting, thuja seedlings are watered weekly at the rate of 10-50 liters of water per sapling, depending on its size. If you arrange for young plants to sprinkle, it will not only moisten the soil and feed the roots of the thuja, but also wash away the dust from the needles, the stomata of the leaves will open, and the plant will breathe much easier, respectively, all physiological processes will proceed faster. After watering, the soil around the tui is loosened, but not deeper than 8–10 cm, since the root system of the plant is superficial.

Feed the thuja in spring with complex mineral fertilizer, for example, with Kemira-station wagon solution at the rate of 50-60 g per m². If you applied fertilizer to the soil during planting, then the next time you need to feed the plant will be only two years later.

Thuja responds well to pruning - the more often and the stronger it is cut, the thicker and more luxurious it becomes. There is no strict framework for pruning, but it is better to work this spring, before the buds unfold. If you grow a hedge from a thuja, then you have no choice: you want, you do not want, and you have to cut it. Growing as a solo plant, the thuja will need at least sanitary and thinning pruning. But if thuis grow as a group, they will have to form their crowns, otherwise they will look sloppy. Begin to form the crown, when the plants have already grown to the size you need. Sometimes one haircut per year is enough - spring, but usually there is a need for re-trimming at the end of summer or early autumn. Some forms need constant adjustment of the crown, but no more than one third of the shoot can be cut at a time, otherwise the plant may weaken. The first pruning of the thuja is carried out no earlier than 2-3 years of life. Use for cutting a very powerful powerful pruner, so that it does not chew shoots and do not leave dents on them.

That's like all the information about how to care for thuja. As you can see, planting and caring for a thuja will not take you much time, but the healthy appearance of this elegant evergreen will surely make your garden more beautiful.

    Thuja transplant.

For various reasons, we sometimes have to transplant adult plants from one place to another. Conifers replant easily enough if you know how to do it. Around medium-sized plants you need to circle the soil with a sharp shovel at a distance of 40-50 cm from the trunk, then carefully pry the plant along with a pristvolny site, outlined circle, remove it from the soil, transport it to a new place with a wheelbarrow, trying not to destroy the earthen room, and immediately same plant. Larger plants need to be pierced a year before transplantation, so that they have time to grow new young roots inside a limited circle of earthen coma - as a result, the ground will not fall apart during extraction and the transportation will be painless for the plant. At the new site, thuja takes root more easily than other conifers.

    Pests and diseases of Tui.

Thuja is susceptible to fungal diseases such as brown shütte, fusarium and cytosporosis, which affect shoots and needles of the plant. In the fight against them, they use Bordeaux liquid treatment or Cartocide - the treatment of the thuja begins in the spring and is repeated every two weeks until the thuja recovers.

Sometimes readers turn to us asking why the thuja turns yellow. The fact is that, from insect pests, the plant is pestered by the false guards and aphids, which is why the thuja turns yellow and its needles fall off. To get rid of parasites, the plant is treated with Karbofos, Rogor or Decis before blooming of buds, and at the end of June they are sprayed twice with Aktellik or Chlorophos every two weeks.

    Reproduction thuja cuttings.

Thuya propagation by cutting is carried out using lignified two-three-year-old shoots 25–40 cm long or half-woody shoots of the current year from 10 to 20 cm long cut in June. Thuya cuttings are not cut, but they are torn off with a heel, treated with a heteroauxin solution, planted to a depth of 1.5-2.5 cm in a mixture of equal parts of turf land, peat and sand, spilled for the purpose of disinfection with a warm solution of potassium permanganate, and cover the planting with plastic wrap. For the successful rooting of the cuttings, it is necessary to maintain high humidity in the greenhouse without over-wetting the substrate, so the soil is not watered, but sprayed from the sprayer. As soon as the cuttings take root, they begin to be aired and gradually tempered until it is time to remove the film. With the onset of deep autumn, the cuttings are covered with dry leaves, sawdust, and the spruce branches are better, and if the temperature drops to -5-7 ºC, a film is thrown onto the spruce branches.

    How to hide thuja.

Young plants that are less than five years old need to be covered with spruce branches for the winter. Before sheltering a thuja for the winter, it is highly spud, and the tree trunk area is mulched with a thick layer of peat. Adult plants overwinter without shelter, but it is necessary to mulch the area around them.

    Wintering thuja.

If too much snow falls in winter, it can break the dense crown and branches of even an adult large thuja. To prevent this from happening, tui for the winter are tied up with a string. At the end of winter, so that the thuja does not suffer from the strong spring sun, they throw non-woven covering material on it. Sometimes, due to sudden changes in temperature in winter, cracks form on the thuja bark. In the spring, they are covered with garden bark and tightly bark, so that the wounds healed.

    Thuja western (Thuja occidentalis).

When we talk about cultural thuja, we mean, first of all, the species of western thuja - it is represented in our gardens, parks and squares by a huge number of its varieties, forms and varieties. In Europe, it was introduced into the culture in the XVI century. Large specimens of this species reach a height of 8-12 m. Thuja is a western long-liver among trees; it can live up to a thousand years. At a young age, this is a pyramidal tree, later the form of the crown becomes ovoid. For gardening, usually use skittid, cone-shaped or columnar plants. For example:

    • thuja Brabant - a tree with a height of 15-21 m with a conical shape of a crown with a diameter of 3-4 m. The bark is exfoliated, gray-brown or reddish. The needles are green, scaly. Thuja cones of this variety are oblong-ovate, brown, up to 12 mm long,
    • Thuja Smaragd - This is a variety of a squat shape up to 2 m in height with a cone-shaped crown and weak branching. On vertically located shoots far from each other glossy evergreen branches. Planting and caring for Touma Smaragd is carried out in accordance with the recommendations in this article. The variety is in great demand.

Among the group of varieties with the spherical shape of the crown are the most famous:

    • thuja Danika - dwarf form of thuja Danish breeding with gray-brown or reddish peeling bark, thick, soft, shiny scaly needles of green color, which in winter acquires a brownish tint,
    • thuja woodward - spherical thuja of dwarf size - no more than 2.5 m with a crown diameter of 5 m. The shoots and branches of it are straight and flat. The needles are dark green.

Attract gardeners and varieties of a cascade, filamentous form, which include:

    • Thuja Filiformis - A tree up to 1.5 m high with a thick round or wide cone-shaped crown, long, thread-like hanging branches that barely branch. Young needles are light green, in winter it gets a brown tint.

Not so long ago, the heather form of thuja was derived, for example:

    • Thuja Erikoides - no more than a meter high, resembling a juniper, with a rounded multi-vertex wide-conical crown, numerous thin flexible shoots, straight or curved, and awl soft needles, on top of dull, yellow-green, bottom gray-green. In winter, the needles turn brown.

A form with two types of needles on a single plant, acicular and scaly, with a strange increase of the crown was also derived: for 8-10 years of life, it splits into several peaks and instead of one thuja a group of plants is formed.

    Thuja folded (Thuja plicata).

The culture also grows a folded thuja, or giant thuja, which grows in nature along the Pacific coast and is the most high-altitude species of thuja. It reaches a height of 60 m with a trunk diameter of 3-4 m, although its achievements in culture are not so high. Thuja folded has several decorative forms, of which the most famous is Zebrina.

    Thuja Japanese (Thuja standishii)

grows in natural habitats, in the mountains of Central Japan, up to 18 m in height, it has a broad cone-shaped crown with copper-red bark and silvery branches on the underside, which when rubbed smell like eucalyptus caramel and lemon. In cool areas, thuja Japanese grows slowly, in a warm area, growth accelerates noticeably.

Thuja eastern (Thuja orientalis), or flat-vein (Platycladus),

isolated in the subgenus biota, whose only representative it is. In nature, it grows in China, and in culture it has been bred for several centuries in Central Asia. This is a large shrub or spreading tree with a lace crown, which is widely used in landscaping. The thuja east has more than 60 garden forms, unfortunately, not winter-hardy.

We introduced you to the variety of types and forms of one of the most beautiful and unpretentious conifers, but it is up to you to decide which thuja will decorate your yard or garden. However, what plant would you choose, with proper care, it can please your eyes for more than a dozen years.

    Specifications

In nature, thuja folded grows along the banks of rivers, seas, in marshy areas and on shady mountain slopes.

Its homeland is considered to be North America. On this continent, it is distributed from California to Alaska. Specimens growing along the coastline prefer moist air, fertile land and positive temperatures.

Mountain beauties are more resistant to low temperatures and are successfully grown even in Canada. Their height does not exceed 20 m. Trees grown under suitable conditions reach a height of 60 m.

The folded foliage differs from other types of thuja by horizontally oriented shoots, on which narrow leaves are located close to each other. Leaves scaly, whitish on the inside.

Cones in this species also differ markedly from others. They are oblong, consist of 4-6 pairs of scales and reach a length of 12 mm.

This article has helped many gardeners to stop straining at their site and at the same time receive a generous harvest.

I never would have thought that in order to get the best harvest in my backyard during my entire dacha career, all I had to do was stop picking on the beds and trust in nature. How many can remember, every summer I spent in the country. First on the parent, and then my husband and I bought ours. From early spring to late autumn, all free time was spent on planting, weeding, garter, pruning, watering, harvesting and, finally, conservation and attempts to preserve the crop until next year. And so in a circle.

Fertilizers need to be applied when the soil is completely thawed. Also in the spring it is necessary to carry out pruning. All unnecessary branches are deleted, and then the desired shape is formed. It is important to produce mulching with peat, bark, needles around the tree. This procedure will help to maintain moisture in the soil, protect against weeds.

Watering is done once a week. Every day you need to sprinkle the crown. This variety is treated with frost with caution. It is desirable to cover saplings from frosts.

    Reproduction thuja folded

If you wish to grow a large number of plants, planting material can be obtained by yourself. Seed breeding method. At the end of the summer, it is necessary to collect the seeds and plant them on the garden bed, cover it with film for the winter.

Cuttings. It is a breeding method by cuttings. It is better to harvest them in June. The cuttings break off from the branch with the condition that there remains a “heel” on them.

Twigs better planted in the ground under large trees. The soil is prepared by digging the ground and adding peat to it. Sand is poured from above. Before planting, the cuttings need to be treated with Epin's solution. After planting plants need to cover the bottle. Transplant to another place should be no earlier than next spring. You can breed thuja throughout the year. Only cuttings obtained in winter are grown indoors.

    Choosing garden forms

Species thuja folded looks great in parks and alleys.

For private land, natural forms are too large. But breeders tried and brought varieties that differ not only in smaller sizes, but also in the color of needles.

Tuya Atrovirens is used to create hedges and as a dominant plant in an evergreen composition. In color, it does not differ from the species form. In height reaches 10-15 m.

The crown is dense, rapidly growing to 3-5 m. The annual increase in height is 30 cm, width - 10 cm. Not demanding on the type of soil. Tolerates shading. Easy to form.

For the same purpose, Zebrina is also planted. It differs from the maternal species in bright needles with yellow streaks. This variety is most often found in private gardens.

Thuja "Zebrina" or "Kornik" with success will occupy a central place in the composition, composed of spruce and juniper. It looks spectacular next to other coniferous plants of the Kornik thuja, distinguished by its beautiful pyramidal shape.

Attracts attention and its bright emerald needles with yellow tips. At a young age, the plant is compact. In the first 10 years it grows to a maximum of 3 m.

But then it begins to grow rapidly and can reach a height of 60 m. The variety is shade tolerant, but it is picky about soil fertility and moisture. In hot weather needs sprinkling.

    Unusual representatives

To achieve the maximum decorativeness of the garden in winter is quite realistic if you plant the Gelderland Tuyu.

While the needles of many garden dwellers fade, this variety acquires a bright bronze color. The maximum tree height is 20 m. The crown is very dense, growing from the ground, but thinning in the shade.

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Easily tolerates heat, but poorly hibernates without shelter. For small areas, the Kan-Kan pyramid thuja that grows up to a maximum of 1.5 m is suitable.

This bonsai tolerates poor soil, shading and frost.

But in order for a beautiful tree to grow from a small sapling, it is necessary to ensure proper care, which includes such activities:

    • fertilizer application
    • formative and sanitary pruning,
    • watering and sprinkling
    • shelter for the winter,
    • protection from diseases and pests.

Nitroammophosphate and complex fertilizer are suitable for spring dressing of tui. Fertilizer is applied after thawing the soil in the calculation of 30-40 g / m2. Pruning is also recommended in early spring. First, remove all damaged branches, and then the crown give the desired shape.

Young trees are watered once every ten days. Water consumption per tree 10-15 liters. It will be useful after the sunset to periodically arrange water procedures for the whole crown. And for newly planted seedlings, it is recommended to carry out sprinkling every evening.

When purchasing thuja folded, it is important to remember that its frost resistance is very conditional. And in the first years it is desirable to cover any sapling. Covering material protects pine needles from freezing and sunburn.

So that the crown does not suffer from the snow, a skeleton is erected above the tree and already spunbond or sackcloth is put on it. To the branches of adult plants, which are no longer harboring, do not break, in the fall the crown is tied with string. The framework can be built independently, using a bar, and it is possible to get ready folding designs.

Usually Tui are sick where they grow in large numbers without leaving. Therefore, in the gardens often carried out preventive spraying spring Bordeaux liquid. Also, Topsin and Hom will save from diseases, and Aktara from pests.

    Where and how to plant

The success of growing tuvyov depends largely on the landing site.

Despite the fact that the described species is able to put up with adverse conditions, it is still better to feel the thuja in areas protected from wind and scorching sunlight. In open to all winds of plants can dry the tips of the needles.

For planting, it is advisable to acquire plants with a closed root system, which take root throughout the season. And plants without a lump of earth can be planted only in spring.

A landing pit is dug up so large that it is twice the size of an earthy coma. In the process of preparing the site, you can determine the composition of the soil. If the soil at the site is not suitable for growing thuja, then a suitable soil mixture is prepared.

You may also find the article about Tui Brabant variety useful.

To do this, mix in equal proportions fertile soil, sand and peat. The complex mineral fertilizer of prolonged (gradual) action is also added to the soil mixture.

Thuja folded unlike other species can put up with excessive moisture. But it is better not to risk and pour a layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the landing pit. So that the root collar does not rot, it should be positioned flush with the top of the hole when landing.

    How to multiply

If you need a large amount of planting material, tui can be grown independently.

If the safety of the variety is not important, then choose the seed method of reproduction. To do this, at the end of the summer, seeds are collected and immediately planted in a garden with a light and moist soil. For winter, crops are covered with foil. If sowing is done in spring, the seeds stratify for one month.

In order for new plants to look like maternal ones, they should be propagated with green or semi-lignified cuttings. The best rooting process occurs in cuttings harvested at the end of June.

Prepared twigs best rooted in the garden under the canopy of trees. First, the plot is dug up and peat is added. Then from above fall asleep layer of sand, which prevents vyprevaniyu.

Pre-cuttings soaked in Epin or Kornevine. Planted twigs tilted to the depth of the sandy layer. Top cover with cans or bottles. The plant is transferred to a permanent place not earlier than the next spring.

Giant thuja deserves to decorate her garden with it. A little care, patience and it will transform it for many decades!
