Lawson's Cypress: Planting and Care

How nice it is when the courtyard of your house has a well-groomed appearance, has flower beds, lawns, evergreen trees and plants. One of the decorations of the courtyards, alleys, squares and parks - Lawson's cypress (Lawson).

He appeared in our area relatively recently and immediately won the sympathy of both landscape designers and amateur gardeners, especially undersized varieties. Planting cypress and care for him are simple.

Botanical description

According to the description, Lawson's cypress is a pyramidal evergreen tree, very similar to thuja. Homeland - North America (California). In nature, it reaches a height of 70–80 m. Most often it grows on the slopes of the mountains, along the banks of rivers.

Grows in shady places, resistant to wind. Loves evenly moist soil of any type. Practically has no pests, is not subject to diseases. The root system is in the topsoil. May have a shrub look. It all depends on the variety.

The crown is usually extended downwards. The branches are flat, lower - almost on the ground. Needles in young plants needle, in mature - scaly species. The bark on the trunk has shades from red-brown to dark brown, almost black.

Cones small round, green, then brownish. Ripen in September, have winged seeds. Under each scale - two seeds.

Popular varieties of evergreen tree

Lawson's cypress is the most beautiful of its species. It has a large number of varieties, but not all of them are suitable for home and landscape cultivation.

Cypress Lawson has about 250 varieties. The most popular for designers and gardeners are decorative varieties that are best adapted to the climatic conditions.

Popular varieties:

Lawson Cypress "Yvonne" - the most beautiful yellow copy. Reaches 7–9 m. Fast-growing, conical shape. Does not change coloring in the winter. Cypress "Alyumi" attractive for its grandeur. Its maximum height is 10 m. The needles have a bluish-steel color. The branches are raised steeply. Cypress "Elwoodi" attracts with its compactness. He is also with a bluish-gray needles. Reaches a height of about 2 m.

Where to plant a plant

The most popular cypress varieties are not particularly demanding to the conditions. That is why they have become popular in our latitudes, because any soil suits them, they tolerate moderate winters well. Can adapt to room conditions for the winter.

The plant will grow in latitudes where the temperature in winter does not fall below 25 ° C. Humidity should be high enough. It is best to plant cypress with green needles in slightly shaded places. He is very sensitive to the sun. Open sun can burn young shoots. Plants with yellow, bluish, blue crown sun is not contraindicated. Cypress is sensitive to cold air currents. It is best to plant the trees in areas protected from the north winds. Cypress will be a wonderful decoration of the alleys of parks and squares, large courtyards, lawns.

Planting and Breeding Rules

Almost all ornamental cypress species reproduce by seed and cuttings. It is best to buy a seedling in a garden nursery or flower shop.

Planting should be done only in the spring. Planted trees can be single, group and allene way. The pit should be deep enough and wide enough that the roots are located in it freely. Depth should be about 1 m. Drainage and fertilizer must be laid on the bottom.

First you need to water the ground in the pit to drainage lay down. Then place the seedling and cover it with earth. Pour again. When the earth crouches, sprinkle with dry soil. The roots should all go under the soil and put down 15-20 cm.

If you decide to multiply cypress at home, you will have to work hard. One of the labor-intensive processes is reproduction by seeds. Collect the seeds you need in the fall, when the buds are ripe.

Next, you need to prepare the seeds. There is no stratification here. For cypress, it is better to use cold stratification, since in nature it will have to endure low temperatures. To do this, you need to soak the seeds for a couple of hours in water, and then plant them in wet sand and place them in a cold place for two months. Sand during this time will have to periodically moisten. The temperature for cold stratification is about 5–7 ° С.

The procedure must be carried out in February-March, so that in April-May it would be possible to transfer the capacity with seeds to a warm place for germination. Approximately in the middle of summer sprouts can be planted in the soil in a shaded place.

If in doubt, plant each seedling into a separate container for growing. Only after two years, the plant can be planted at a permanent place of growth.

It is necessary to plant in a tank with good drainage, loose moist soil. Immerse in the ground by the needles - 3-4 cm. You can make a greenhouse, you can do without it. The plant will take root. As a result, you get a ready sapling. It is also possible to replant the seedling in open ground only after two years.

Peculiarities of care

Care for Lawson's cypress is simple. Three aspects are important in it: watering, fertilizer, pruning. Watering should be moderate but regular.

Since the plant loves humid air, in the hot season the air around the tree needs to be moistened. If it is not possible to water the plant often, it is necessary to mulch the soil with peat and sawdust under it.

Fertilizer should be a complex mineral fertilizer every spring. Be sure to loosen the soil after feeding. Crop cypress is also produced in the spring. First you need to remove the dry branches. Krona does not need to form.

Only if the branches are very much stretched, they can be a little pruned and pulled. If the crown is not symmetrical, in “bald” places you can lubricate the stem with a special solution. It stimulates the growth of branches.

That's the whole care in the open air. If you are worried that the plants will not survive in the bitter cold, plant them in tubs and put them into the room for the winter.

So, if you plan to decorate your yard, garden, land, then you will not find a better plant than cypress. It will not only please the eye with a fluffy crown at any time of the year, but will also give an aesthetic and well-groomed look to your site as a whole, especially if you use a group or aerial landing.

Lawson Cypress: species description

In 1855, a botanist from Sweden, Loveson, discovered a new species of conifers, which he named in his honor. At one time there were many of these trees, and they grew throughout Europe and America. They destroyed them because of the light, very fragrant and not rotting wood. Now in nature, this plant can be found only at an altitude of 1.5 km in the mountain valleys of Oregon and California. These are slender and graceful trees, only the tops of them are slightly wilted.

Many gardeners believe that the most beautiful conifer tree is Lawson's cypress. The photo below shows Pembury Blue. These beauties grow up to 70 meters in height. At the same time their trunk can reach 2 meters in diameter! The bark of Lawson's cypress is brown in color, exfoliated in structure. Sprigs scaly, a bit like thuja. They begin to grow from the bottom of the trunk. The flowers are located on the tips, with the male usually red, and the female - green. Fruits are cones that look like small balls. They are much smaller than cypress, which is one of the main differences between these two relatives.

Features of the form

Lawson's cypress is valued by gardeners for its spectacular appearance. It blooms in spring. On the same tree are flowers of both sexes. Cones when ripe from green are made brown. Their diameter is only up to 1 cm. Inside there are scales, each of which has two seeds. Lawson's cypress soil loves sandy, with a pH from 4 to 5.5. On limestone and clay it grows badly, it hurts. He suffers drought with great difficulty, but he also does not like strong waterlogging. It can be planted in sunny areas, in partial shade and even shadow. Only varieties with yellow needles should grow in the sun, otherwise they will turn green. Frosts cypress are not terrible. Many varieties and at -25 do not get sick, but young seedlings for the winter should be covered. This plant is a long-liver. There are instances that are over 600 years old.

Lawson's cypress breeds cuttings, young shoots, seeds, layering. Gardeners consider cutting the most practical. Material harvested in the spring with the active growth of the plant. Young twigs 30-35 cm long are cut from it, placed in pots with earth and covered with polyethylene. The soil should always be kept wet. The roots of the cutting start up quickly. The future tree should be transplanted from the pot to the site into a prepared pit, the bottom of which is paved with a layer of drainage material (crushed stone, broken brick). At first, the seedling can also be covered with polyethylene.

In the photo above - Lawson Cypress Erecta Aurea.

Cypress seeds should be held in water for 6 hours before planting, then placed in a refrigerator for several months at a temperature of +1 ... +5 o C. They are sown in the fall in the ground or in boxes. In winter, they are left outside (must be covered with snow), and in the spring they are brought into heat.

Cuttings are obtained as follows: in the side branch of cypress, they make a serif, insert something there (for example, a pebble), and, bending down to the ground, drop it. This place should always be wet. When roots have roots, it is separated from the branch and planted separately.

Choosing a place on the site

Cypress Lawson, planting and care that require attention, is able to decorate every corner of the garden. However, so that he does not get sick, you need to choose the right place for him. The plant is not planted:

  • close to roads with heavy traffic in order to avoid strong gas pollution of the air, which cypress will breathe,
  • in the lowlands, where it is always damp and cool,
  • on all winds blown north sides of the site.

Lawson's cypress will enjoy:

  • near a permanent source of water (spring, artificial lake),
  • in the southern elevated areas where there is a barrier from the wind (for example, from the house),
  • on flat areas without strong winds.

Having decided on the place, you need to check the ground for pH. It is better to do this with a tester probe. In the place where Lawson's cypress will grow, a small hole (5-10 cm) is dug, cleaned of plant residues and filled with distilled water. In the resulting slush placed tester, the scale of which in a minute will give readings. If they are too low (pH up to 3), which is unlikely, you can add wood ash to the ground. If too high (pH 6 and above), you need to make peat or needles. Having dealt with the pH, they dig a hole under their plant. She must be allowed to warm up. At the bottom of this pit lay drainage (15-20 cm). When planting, the cypress root neck should be at the surface level. Soil for the plant is prepared from the following components: sand, humus, peat, leaf earth in a ratio of 2: 3: 1: 2.

In order for Lawson's cypress to grow well, it must also be taken care of by the rules. They are few. In summer, the plant requires:

  • regular watering at the rate of 8 to 10 liters per tree,
  • in the heat - spraying the crown with water,
  • soil mulching under cypress to preserve moisture,
  • loosening around the trunk,
  • fertilizer with organic and mineral complexes at least once a month.

  • pruning dry branches, crown formation (if desired),
  • gardening treatment of frozen areas on the trunk,
  • Fertilizer "Kemira-Universal", for which the mixture in the calculation of 150 g per m 2 is mixed with soil and watered.

Young seedlings need:

  • summer in the heat additional shadow and spraying,
  • winter shelter from the frost lapnikom or a thick layer of sawdust, remove the shelter when stable warm weather.

The photo above demonstrates how Lawson's Cypress Blue Nantais looks like.

Cypress on the windowsill

If desired, you can grow Lawson's cypress at home. For this fit dwarf varieties. The apartment cypress are required to ensure the correct temperature, lighting and humidity. Plants do not post:

  • near radiators and other heating systems,
  • on the south side windows (with the exception of varieties with yellow needles),
  • in small close komorka.

Basic rules for care:

1. Provide the plant a resting phase. For this, for the winter, a pot with cypress should be taken out in a cool room, where the air temperature is +5 ... + 10 degrees. The humidity should be about 70%. With a smaller plant regularly need to spray. Land in a pot and in winter should be moderately wet. A good accommodation option is a loggia if there is no temperature below 0 on it.

2. Rotate the plant pot in relation to natural light. Do it slowly, about 10 degrees a couple of times a month.

3. As we grow, it is recommended to transfer cypress trees into a larger pot. The new "house" should be a little more than the previous one. It is desirable to shake off the old soil from the roots during transplantation. New soil is prepared in the same proportions as for plants in the garden.

4. Watering, spraying, fertilizer indoor pet is performed according to the general principle of care for cypress.

Diseases and pests

Lawson's cypress is considered a species resistant to all kinds of diseases. But it can also be infected. The following pests affect both cypress and growing on the street:

1. Spider mite. Lives on the underside of the needles, weaving for themselves housing from the web. Yellow dots appear on the upper side of the branches from their vital activity.

Fight: repeated spraying with a weekly interval of acaricidal agents. The biological preparation Bitoxibacillin is also effective.

2. Shchitovka. It is difficult to fight this dangerous pest, since its body is covered with a shield that does not let in any toxins. The infected cypress needles are covered with characteristic plaques. These are the places where the shield insects cling to the leaf and drink juice from it. The plant stops growing, turns yellow.

Fight: A diseased plant must be immediately isolated from healthy. Brush (you can toothbrush), moistened in "Karbofos", "Aktare", thoroughly clean off all plaques. Strongly affected plants are destroyed.

3. Root rot. It is called a fungus that begins to develop on the roots, but penetrates the body of the plant. From there, it is no longer possible to remove it. A fungus appears when the soil moisture is too high. Signs of the disease - yellowing of the needles and drying out of the plant.

Struggle: only at the initial stage you can try to save cypress, having dug it out of the ground, cutting the roots to their healthy part and transplanting it to a new place, previously treated with antifungal preparations.

One of the favorite variety of gardeners is Lawson's Elwoodi cypress. It grows in a slender shrub up to 1.5 m. Only plants aged over 15 years stretch up to 3 m. Their crowns are lush, wide at the bottom (up to 1.2 m), tapering upwards. All branches are directed only upwards. Their tips hang slightly. The needles are thin, openwork, bluish-steel in winter and blue-green in summer. The root system is superficial, has many thin roots. Therefore, in areas with harsh winters, it is better not to plant it on the street or carefully cover it in the cold. Lawson's cypress Elwoodi requires the same care as other members of the species. But, according to the observations of gardeners, he is able to withstand any soil, only on calcareous, he needs additional feedings. The plant develops well in partial shade and in the sun, feels wonderful indoors. The only thing that he necessarily needs is timely watering and sufficient humidity. In the heat, you can flourish the soil around the tree with peat so that the earth does not dry out. Water it better sprinkling. Elwoodi looks great in single or group plantings as a hedge and a decoration for alleys.

Lawson Colonaris cypress is one of the most unpretentious and frost-resistant. He feels good and in the city, where the air is saturated with industrial emissions. The trees of this variety in height reach up to 10 m, growing annually by 20 cm. In the lower part, the width of its crown is up to 1.5 m. Such a slender bluish-blue candle. The branches at Kolumnaris are short and thick, the needles are unusually fragrant. Its color, initially bluish-blue, with age acquires and greenish shades. This variety prefers alkaline, as a last resort, neutral soil. The ground around the trunk of Cyprian Lawson Columnarus must be loosened, since it is quite sensitive to compaction of the upper layer.

Dwarf varieties

Low cypress trees are used to create beautiful corners in the garden. Usually it is trees up to 2 meters high. They look great as single-growing, and in group compositions using contrasting herbaceous plants or low shrubs. A great variety of sredneroslyh varieties boasts Lawson cypress Elwood. Very popular are Ellwoods Blue with a bluish crown, Ellwoods Gold, whose young shoots have a golden color, Ellwoods Pillar with a thick, very compact crown of blue shades.

A rather interesting sort of Filiformis Compacta (pictured above) with a sprawling delicate crown, taking for 10 years incredibly “big” sizes - 60 x 75 cm. Ellwoods Nymph, which resembles a live fluffy ball, and Forsteckensis, which resembles a lush bouquet of needles. Their height is only 30 cm, so for the house it is just what you need. And those who want to grow green pets higher, no doubt will like half a meter Minima Glauca - lush, with rich green needles, Minima Aurea - also a lush mini-tree, whose needles are green, and on the tips of the branches is golden-green, Lutea Nana with an unusually growing branches (like a rose bud) and the Emerald, like a little thuja.

Decorative varieties of Lawson

Homeland cypress Lawson - North America. In nature, there are trees up to 70 m tall. The distinctive features are dark green needles and a bent tip. Seeds ripen in large gray-brown cones at the ends of the branches. Ornamental varieties have more modest size. As a permanent residence, cypress trees will enjoy the neighborhood with a small body of water, the southern section near buildings or the plain, where there are no strong winds.

The most famous varieties of Lawson:

  1. Elwoodi. Green-blue crown in the form of a cone. The branches have the peculiarity of wilting at the tips. Height not more than 3 m.
  2. Snow white Shrub with needles that have a silver frame. Coloniform plant shape.
  3. Yvonne. The fast-growing variety, differs in resistance to a fitoftor. The golden yellow color of the needles persists in the winter. The height of 2.5 m, the plants reach the 10th year of life.
  4. Columnaris. Trees reaching a height of 10 m. Needles have a beautiful blue-gray color.

Breeding methods

You can multiply cypress Yvonne:

The easiest way to get a young plant is cutting. In the spring, at the time of active growth of cypress, cuttings of 30-35 cm in size are cut. Young twigs are chosen for this. Place in a loose wet substrate and cover with a package. It is necessary to monitor the condition of the soil in the greenhouse, to avoid drying out. Roots cypress Yvonne quickly enough. During reproduction, the conical shape of the crown will remain vegetatively.

Seed method will require more time and patience. Material for planting is collected in the fall from mature cones. Dried at t +45 C. Store in a closed container, in conditions not lower than t +5 C. Cypress seeds are able not to lose their germination until they are 15-17 years old.

Attention! In the case of cypress seed reproduction, plants can lose varietal characteristics.

The next stage before landing is stratification. Before this, the seeds are soaked in water for 5-6 hours and after, put in storage at t + 1 ... + 5 C. They are kept in the cold for several months. It is convenient to carry out a natural stratification: containers with seeds are taken out on the street in October until February-March. Boxes must be covered with snow or straw to prevent freezing. In March, the containers are brought into the house. In April, shoots will appear. Young plants are watered sparingly, protected from direct sunlight.

To adapt to outdoor conditions, it is useful to bring seedlings seated in pots to an open, windless place. With the advent of heat, grown cypress planted in the nursery. Here they spend the winter under shelter, in the spring the youngsters are seated in permanent places. Only cypresses, having crown forms prostrate or prostrate, propagate with layers.

Planting in open ground

Place for landing choose open with light penumbra. In strong shading, the plant will lose the bright color of the needles. In low areas, where water stagnation is possible, the roots easily infect rot. The selected place is prepared in advance. They dig up the soil in the fall, fertilize in the ratio: 2: 2: 1: 3:

By the spring, all components are rotting, forming the necessary conditions for seedlings. At the time of planting, additional mineral fertilizers are added. For example, "Nitrofosku." Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus contained there are vital elements for full growth and development.

The wells for cypress dig up wide, since the root system is well-branched. At the bottom of the stack drainage layer is not less than 20 cm (broken brick, crushed stone of a large fraction). The distance between several seedlings is better to do about 2 m.

The surface after planting is mulched, thus protecting the soil from overheating and freezing. Peat, sawdust, pine needles, small bark, ash are used as mulch.

Basic pest care and protection

Cypress Yvonne has a good frost resistance, but does not tolerate heat. Therefore, it needs additional watering. Summer watered every week. Calculation of water per plant: 8-10 l. Young trees in the heat sprayed completely.

After watering, the near-stem circle is loosened, getting rid of weeds. If mulch has been produced, water only after completely drying the mulch.
Well cypress will respond to min. fertilizer. Ready-made compositions for conifers are diluted in water or scattered, buried in the ground. By the end of July, feeding is stopped.

Attention! Young plants start feeding not earlier than two months after planting. Indicated on the packaging rate, halved.

In the winter cypress harbor. For this fit fir twigs, kraft paper, burlap. Shelter will protect not only from frost, but also from sunburn. You can get them both in winter and in early spring.
Because of the sudden changes in temperature, cracks often appear on the cortex. Such wounds need treatment with garden pitch.

In the spring, wintered plants inspect. Perform the necessary pruning, removing dry, frozen branches.

The main pest of cypress is considered late blight of the roots. You can notice it by withering of the shoots. Infected trees are dug up and destroyed far from the site. The rest - watered fungicides. Among insect pests, cypress trees are affected by bark beetles, spider mites, mining moths, worms, scutes, aphids. To combat them use chemical. drugs. Timely detection and removal of infected trees, save the rest of the planting.

Cypress Yvonne in landscape design

Cypress cypress is easy to form. Removing greenery in the fall by a third stimulates active growth of young shoots. Decorative trimming is performed to maintain the natural shape. Looks good and diverse curly haircut. In the house cypresses are grown using bonsai technique.

With the usual room content plants can grow to a considerable size. The main thing is not to allow the air and soil to dry out, to be watered and sprayed in time. Also cypress need good lighting. To ensure that the crown develops evenly, the flowerpots from time to time turn to the light.

You should not place hvoyniki near heating batteries, on the southern windows, in very small rooms. The cypress pea fruit and Lavson are most adapted to the home content. In the backyard landscape cypress combined with other conifers: thuja, spruce, fir. Planted singly and in groups, making out alpine slides, flower beds, alleys and paths.

Description and features of the form

Cypress is a tall tree, reaching a height of 81 m. It has a crown in the form of a cone and looks very similar to its relatives - thuja and cypress. However, the top of it is slightly wilted, because it is formed from small horizontal branches or shoots directed downwards.

The bark of the plant is dark brown and covered in small scales. Needles are also scaly. Some species have a rather thick trunk, reaching up to two meters in diameter. The branches begin to form from the very bottom of the trunk.

On the plant both male and female flowers develop simultaneously. They are located at the ends of the shoots. In this case, female flowers have a greenish tint, and male color is red. Flowering occurs in spring. After flowering, the period of fruit formation - small rounded cones. At the very beginning they are green, but they ripen closer to September, turn brown, and then open, releasing a lot of winged seeds. Each cone scale has two seeds.

Coniferous plant prefers moderately acidic or slightly acidic sandy soils (pH not higher than six). It grows poorly on clay and calcareous soils, so it is often sick. Drought withstands with difficulty, but does not tolerate stagnant water at the roots.

At a young age is actively developing in the shading. More mature plants feel good on the sunny side. Some species and varieties particularly need the sun. These include varieties that have a crown with a yellow tint.

Cypress perfectly tolerates frosts to -25 C. However, for young plants need shelter for the winter. In general, perennial unpretentious and lives a long time.

It is worth noting that some people confuse Lawson cypress with cypress. These related plants are similar in appearance. The difference lies in the structure of the needles and the shape of the crown. Cypress needles are ribbed, while cypress needles are smooth. From above, the cypress crown has a pointed shape; it has a drooping cypress.

Variety variety

Perennial has a number of great varieties. They differ from each other in crown shape, color of needles and height. Therefore, plant lovers have plenty to choose from. The most popular are the following varieties:

  • Columnaris (Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Columnaris). Perennial grows rapidly, reaching three to four meters in height in ten years. The maximum height of the plant is eight meters. It has a narrow columnar crown and dark green with a blue tint. When forming hedges and trellises from all cypress trees, it is best to use Loveson's cypress columnaris. Planting and care of them correspond to the general scheme of care for cypress, which is listed above. The plant is unpretentious, has an average cold resistance.
  • Globoza (Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Globosa). Refers to dwarf varieties. It has a horizontal arrangement of branches and needles of green with blue tint. Cypress Lawsona Globoza reaches a height of one meter in a few years of active growth.
  • Wisseli (Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Wisselii). This is a tall tree growing to five to ten meters in height. The shape of the crown is bow-shaped, and the color of the needles is dark green with a characteristic gray tint. It has high frost resistance, unpretentious care. Lawson's Cypress Tree Hanging (Wisseli) is a spectacular garden decoration.
  • Ellwody (Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ellwoodii). It has a crown with a rounded top. The color of its needles is blue-green in summer and gray-blue in winter. It reaches a height of 1.5 meters in ten years. Bad winters and requires protection from the wind.

Cypress Care

For active growth and well-being, cypress need to create conditions. It does not differ in particular whimsicalness, but is picky about certain features of the place of growth. So, it will grow well if the landing site has the following characteristics:

  • protected from the wind
  • located on the south side
  • has good drainage.

Determining a place under the plant, you should measure the pH of the soil with a special device. For sandy soils, the minimum pH value should be four, and if it is less, ash can be added to the soil. The maximum pH value should not exceed 5.5. If it is higher, then peat or needles are added to the soil.

Plant care can be divided into periods:

  • Summer. In the warm season, the cypress tree needs monthly fertilizing with mineral fertilizers, mulching and loosening of the tree trunk, as well as abundant and regular watering (up to 10 buckets per tree). If the plant is young, then it is kept in the shade and sprayed.
  • Spring. With the onset of spring, the plant removes all dry, broken and diseased branches, and also feeds it with mineral fertilizers, forms a crown as needed.
  • Autumn. It concerns mainly young plants that need to be protected from frost by building a shelter for them for the winter.

Cypress trees are grown at home, observing simple rules of care. So, for perennial rest period is necessary in winter. The plant contains at air temperature from +5 С to +10 С and relative air humidity not less than 70%. If the air humidity is less than recommended, then cypress should be additionally sprayed.

The volume of the pot with the plant should correspond to the volume of the root ball. If the perennial has grown, it is recommended to replace the planting container with a new one, by increasing the diameter of the pot by a couple of centimeters. Transplantation is desirable to do the method of transshipment, not violating the integrity of the roots.

Lighting should be natural. Each month, the plant is once turned to the sun, changing the previous position by 10. Watering should comply with the general rules of care for cypress.

Origin and species

East Asia gave gardeners four species of plant data, and North America gave three. Within one species there is a huge number of varieties. The leader in the diversity and beauty of varieties can be called Lawson cypress (chamaecyparis lawsoniana) from America. This type of crown density, rapid growth, endurance, a wide variety of colors of needles are inherent. Other species also have their advantages and disadvantages:

  1. Tuive cypress has an unusual bluish shade of needles, grows low (up to 10 m). The crown-like crown allows the plant to be used as an alley. The downside of this type is whimsical care, dependence on the climatic zone. Best of all grows in the Crimea and adjacent climatic zones.
  2. Pea lives up to twenty years, has a meter height, high resistance to cold. Color needles - silver blue. Quality care affects life expectancy. It can even live in central Russia.
  3. Dumb look got its name because of the shape of the leaves. Usually low plants with a dense crown-cone. The color of the needles is green with a yellow tinge; on the bottom, needles have white streaks. All plants of the species need good drainage and no freezing, so cypress trees are sheltered for the winter.
  4. Nuntkan view has a lush but narrow cone-shaped crown. The plant is whimsical to the light; young shoots are covered for the winter. In terms of soil cypress does not need special conditions, durable.
  5. Formosa view cypress with a green crown, having a brownish tint, can reach the largest sizes among relatives. Only greenhouses or places similar to its homeland, Taiwan, can become its habitat.
  6. Drooping branches mourning cypress - a frequent sight near cemeteries of China, Japan. Hence its name. The color of the needles is green with a distinct gray tint. It is possible to use this look both in street landings, and for a decor of the house (bonsai tree).

Approaching the decoration of the site with cypress trees, one should take into account not only their frost resistance, but also the possibilities of the territory: only sunny places with light shading will suit these types. In addition, they quickly grow in width and height, which may simply not fit into the conditions provided or significantly spoil the life of the neighboring plants.

Most popular species

Cypress columnaris in the care and planting features in comparison with the relatives does not have. For decorative purposes, they are even used as a hedge, since the height of the tree is up to 3.5-4 m, and the width of the thick crown is up to 2 m. The columnar structure simplifies the decorative trimming and giving a clear shape. Thanks to the bluish shade of pine needles, columnaris can be used both in group plantings and in single copies. On frost resistance - one of the highest rates among cypress. Suitable for the north of Ukraine, central Russia.

Cypress red star thyoides will be an unusual accent for any garden. His needles during the year turns from rich emerald green to maroon. The shrub grows to 1.5-2 m in height, has a broad and dense crown, suitable for decorative pruning. Due to its small size it may be suitable for growing in containers, winter gardens. Treats to frost-resistant, durable and unpretentious types in leaving. In order to maintain a stable aesthetic form, it needs to be cleaned from dead branches.

Cypress Lawsona Globoza one of the dwarf species, suitable for planting on open ground, and for growing in a container. Light green scaly leaves form a dense crown, which reaches a height of 140-150 cm. Amenable to decorative cleaning. It can be used for registration of borders, decorative fences. Withstands urban habitats, therefore, is used as a plant cleaner for air.

Cypress Yvonne (ivonne) - golden accent on the site, because its needles have a pronounced yellow-golden hue, only in the shade it becomes light green or faded. The tree is conical and high (up to 10 m), fast-growing, durable, has a dense wide crown. Used in suburban areas, mixborders, curbs.

Suitable for urban recreation areas. Quite cold-resistant variety (up to minus 28C), but when frosting quickly loses the color of the needles, which becomes brown, brown. In the spring, the tree itself is cleaned from the frozen leaves. Of the peculiarities of care - compulsory watering in dry weather and spraying, and in the late autumn - covering the basal circle.

Есть еще множество видов, но не столь известных. Например, такие как кипарисовик алюми, сноу уайт и пелтс блю.

Planting and care

Подготовка к посадке любого вида и сорта кипарисовика включает в себя выбор светлого, или немного затемненного места, удобренного торфом. Лучше себя чувствуют деревца на хорошо дренируемых почвах.

The depth of the pit for planting depends on the size of the seedling, the principle of planting - the roots should be covered completely with ground + 15 cm of soil is above them. Bottom circle of food - up to a meter in diameter, always fluffed, without weeds. Covering the plants for the winter, first of all it provides for the insulation of the root zone.

Care after planting includes a slight fertilizer application (too much will either kill the plant or affect the color of the needles too much). Minerals are rarely better to make, more often - peat. It is good if cypress trees always have enough moisture. For this, sawdust and bark are left in the root zone so that they hold moisture. And also use a spraying of the crown of the plant with water. In hot weather - every day, in rainless, but moderately hot - at least once a week to prevent the needles from losing color.

Cleaning cypress includes an annual cleaning of dry branches. You can apply the decorative formation of the crown: most varieties tolerate even radical cutting well. Particular attention - the bark. It often cracks, so when inspecting trees, you should have a garden pitch at hand to handle problem areas.

Appearance Description

Homeland cypress is Japan, Taiwan and some parts of the United States. In these countries, cypress is also valued for quality wood. In Japan, it is customary to build temples from this wood..

The cypress has a strong trunk that is covered with brown or grayish bark. The cone-shaped crown is growing on the trunk. The color of the crown is mostly dark green. But the lower part of the crown is painted gray. But other species may have other colors. For example, Blunt Cypress has an interesting blue crown color. Blunt Cypress is very similar to Kontort, Alyum and Sundari. The most common types of cypress are Blunt, Lawson, Nana, Boulevard and others.

In the garden, plant height rarely exceeds 20-40 meters. The plant has flat, sagging branches. The needles form on the branches, in the lower part it is scaly, and in the upper part - cross. At the ends of the branches are formed small cones, their diameter does not exceed 2 centimeters. Cones have a rounded shape, when opening covered with cracks.

Lawson's cypress is different from other species that has small hairpins next to the sprout.

Features of planting and care

Before purchasing a seedling, you must decide on the landing site. Based on the selected site, you can select the type of plant. For example, in sunny areas it is worth planting only plants with yellow-green needles. And if on the site you can allocate a place with a small shadow, then you can plant any kind of cypress.

The best place will be the area that does not fall into direct sunlight, but still it is well lit. With a lack of ultraviolet rays, the plant will gradually wither and eventually die. It is also worth noting that it is impossible to choose lowland places and drafts for planting. In such areas, the plants will constantly hurt.

As for the soil, it is impossible to plant Lawson cypress on the ground, which is composed of limestone. Soil acidity should be moderate. Black soil will be ideal soils, they are fertile.

Planting is carried out in the spring, and at a time when the soil is warm enough. But to grow big and healthy tree it is necessary to do preparatory work in the fall.

Preparing a landing site

Preparation of the site begin in October. During this period, you can dig up the area, this procedure is carried out carefully. Digging should be carried out to the depth of the spade bayonet. After digging it is necessary to fence the site and dig a hole. For a regular seedling, it is necessary to dig a hole 90 centimeters deep and about 60 centimeters in diameter.

If you plan to plant a group of plants, then between them leave a distance of 1 to 4 meters. This distance depends on the height of the adult plant and the required planting density.

20 centimeters of brick chips or expanded clay are poured into the prepared pit. Such a layer will serve as drainage, and it will drain moisture from the roots of the plant to the deeper layers of the soil.

Now you can fertilize the pit. To start in a separate container It is necessary to mix two parts of peat, three parts of humus, three parts of sod land and one part of sand. All components are mixed, add the top layer of earth and mix well again. The prepared mixture is filled half dug holes. For the winter period, the pits are covered with a film so that the soil is well pereperela, subsided and formed a favorable microclimate.

Choosing the right seedling

You can grow a beautiful tree only from high-quality planting material, so you should take a responsible attitude to the choice of Lawson's cypress.

  • First of all, you need to pay attention to the roots, they should not be without land. Bare roots quickly dry out, which means that such a plant will take a long time to settle down.
  • You should also pay attention to the crown, the needles should be dry and elastic, and the branches themselves should have good flexibility.

Planting a plant

In the spring you can start planting. Prepared in advance pit is worth inspect and pour. If the pit did not fall asleep, then you can start landing. The pot with the acquired plant must be dipped in a bucket of water. An earthen clod of a young plant must be completely soaked with water. Only after that the bush is taken out, trying not to damage the roots. Then the roots are lowered into the pit, gently straightened and covered with earth. The root neck of the plant should be above the ground, the distance from the neck to the ground should be at least 10 centimeters. This landing will be the key the fact that the root neck is not constantly moist and does not begin to rot. Planted plant watered.

The young plant is immediately fed with nitroammofoskoy. It is better to add this element to the pit at the preparatory stage, but if fertilizer was not added to the pit, it is bred in water and a young bush is watered. For each plant you need to make 300 grams of nitroammofoski.

Completion of planting will be mulching of the soil around the trunk of crushed bark, sawdust or dry peat.

When planting high species of cypress need to provide support. As a support you can use a regular stick, which is stuck into the ground near the trunk. To tie a peg trunk.
