Cactus "Queen of the Night" - a rare and unique plant. It earned its unique fame by blooming only once a year, and then only at night. Cactus "Queen of the Night" is also called the dragon flower.
There is one beautiful legend associated with it.
It is believed that thousands of years ago, a certain kingdom ruled a small kingdom. She was kind, generous and very pretty, and so much so that she was shy of her beauty and did not show herself to her subjects. She left her castle only once a year - the darkest night. She avoided her small possessions and left gifts and letters at the doors of the houses of her people. People, waking up in the morning, discovered these gifts and were happy. They simply idolized their queen.
But all good things end sooner or later. The end of peaceful life in this kingdom has come. No one knows where this evil dragon came from and why he decided to attack this little kingdom. But he demanded to build himself huge chambers of gold and precious stones, to cover the floors with carpets. Dragon warned that if the inhabitants of the small kingdom did not fulfill his demands, he would eat every day for the most beautiful girl. People came to despair, because all they had was love and kindness. They were so poor that they even had no carpets. But they could not explain this to the evil dragon - he simply didn’t want to listen to them. And then a beautiful queen came out to meet the fire-breathing snake.
She asked him not to touch the defenseless people and invited him to eat himself instead of all the beauties of the kingdom. The dragon became thoughtful and promised not to touch anyone, but on condition that the queen would give him all her beauty, and she would become an ugly monster like him. The girl happily agreed and stretched out her arms to the beast. At the same time, the terrible fire-breathing monster turned into the most beautiful woman, and the queen - into a completely non-ordinary thorny cactus, something resembling a winged serpent.
But whatever the appearance, nothing can destroy the beauty of the soul. From then until now, one night in the year, the Queen of the Night cactus gives people a wonderful flower that can heal broken hearts. After all, kindness and a generous heart are eternal, unlike beauty, which blooms and fades.
Cactus "Queen of the Night" is used in homeopathy. Most valued are its young stems and flowers from which tincture is made. In medicine, when applying extracts from a given plant, the source material is first carefully examined, since it often happens that unscrupulous suppliers bring not the Queen of the Night cactus (photo attached), but ordinary Opuntia.
The resulting homeopathic remedy is used in the treatment of angina, neurosis, to restore weak heart muscle. However, almost all cacti (photos and names are given) are often used in homeopathy, but their healing properties have been studied very little. None of the researchers have yet provided any accurate data on the effects of alkaloids contained in cactus, which have a positive effect on the heart.
Currently, the cactus "Queen of the Night" more and more attracted the attention of scientists involved in the development and research of drugs designed to improve cardiac activity. After all, as stated in the legend, this cactus is able to heal sick human hearts. It may well happen that in this inconspicuous flower lies the salvation of the lives of many thousands of people. As in the legend.
Cactus Selenicereus - unusual even for his family. From one rhizome grow from 2 to 7 shoots that creep along the ground or trail along the trunks of nearby plants. Despite the fact that the branches of the Queen of the night can reach a length of up to 12 meters (pi with a diameter of 2-3 centimeters) and braid even large trees, they are not flexible. To change their shape in the future is impossible, so you need to immediately send shoots to the desired gardener.
One of its many names - Grandiflorus - this cactus received due to its flowering. The diameter of the flower varies from 15 to 30 centimeters. In addition, the receptacle and the corolla tube are also quite massive (from 20 to 40 centimeters, respectively), which visually significantly increases the whole plant.
Queen or queen Selenicereus was named because of the shape and color of his petals. Each of them resembles a jagged spire of a crown, formed in the form of an elongated drop with a sharp tip. The variety of colors is huge, from pale white to bright lemon. In addition, the feature of the Queen of the night is that the flowers bloom in the evening and please the eye mainly at night, which also affected the name.
Types of Selenicereus for home cultivation
In the wild, there are about 30 different species of Selenicereus. Not all of them take root at home due to the particular structure of the root system and the demands on useful minerals and trace elements in the soil. The most popular species for growing in a pot for many years remain:
- Selenicereus grandiflora. Differs from all other subspecies in the size of inflorescences. They are never less than 20 centimeters, they usually keep around 30 in diameter. The color of the petals is very bright.
- Selenitsereus Honduras. An unusual plant, the flower of which consists of two layers. The first layer of petals forms a needle "collar", and the second layer, more gentle, folds into the flower itself.
Despite the fact that the moon cereus blooms at night, during the day he needs a lot of bright sunlight for healthy growth and development. In addition, the hard peel of the shoots allows him to quietly be in direct sunlight.
The amount of light required by the Selenicereus varies from the flowering stage of the cactus. At the time of formation of buds, this plant needs a high level of illumination.
After that, when it begins to bloom, it is better to reduce the amount of light so that during the day the flowers do not close, but continue to please the gardener.
Selenitsereus is a heat-dependent cactus, therefore it needs a special microclimate in the apartment. In summer, the plant comfortably feels in a moderate lane if the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees. Problems with the maintenance of the Queen of the Night can begin in the winter, if for some reason the indicator of the mercury column of the thermometer drops below 16 degrees. The shoots of the cactus in such cases will begin to die, infecting the whole plant with poison.
Also Selenitsereus extremely negative reaction to sudden changes in temperature and drafts. If in a room where a pot of cactus stands, it suddenly becomes cold or hot, he can shed flowers and significantly stop his growth due to stress. A draft can lead to the death of shoots.
How to water
Care for Selenicereus at home implies timely and proper watering. This plant, like most cacti, does not require abundant irrigation.
The Queen of the night does not have its own established irrigation scheme. How often it is necessary to irrigate the soil depends on the temperature and humidity of the air, as well as on the composition of the substrate. If the top layer of soil (3-4 centimeters) managed to dry out, then the plant should be watered on the same day.
For irrigation water is used at room temperature, which had previously been settled for 24 hours. This is necessary so that all the harmful and heavy substances that, if in running water, settle to the bottom of the watering can. You can make the liquid softer using acetic acid or citric acid (1 tea bed per half liter of water).
To air humidity Selenicereus is not too whimsical. It does not need to be additionally sprayed even in the winter season, when, due to the heating season, the microclimate becomes much drier.
The soil for Selenicereus must be prepared specially from strictly defined components. It can be purchased in specialized stores, or you can collect it yourself. The correct substrate consists of:
- Leaf soil. This component contains the necessary amount of nitrogen, which will help the cactus to grow quickly and will not destroy its root system.
- River coarse sand. One of the most important components of the soil. The sand substrate is quite loose, due to which the roots of the Queen of the Night receive the necessary amount of nutrients and oxygen.
- Crushed charcoal. It has an antiseptic effect, helps fight pests.
- Tiny broken bricks or expanded clay. It also increases the level of soil looseness, helps not to retain moisture, so that the roots of the cactus do not rot.
- Peat. It saturates the substrate with useful substances and trace elements, helps to accumulate them after feeding.
Drainage is also an important element. It is laid on the bottom of the pot with a layer of approximately 2-3 centimeters. As a drainage, you can use broken brick or small pebbles.
Care at home with Selenicereus implies regular soil fertilization. Due to the length of the shoots, this cactus needs a large amount of trace elements and minerals for healthy growth and development. Fertilizers and stimulants are the best helpers in this business.
In order for the soil not to be depleted, it is necessary to feed the feed at least three times a month in summer, and at least once a month in winter. Between fertilizers should take breaks of at least 1.5 weeks.
Cacti because of its fast-growing root system in the first 5-6 years of life in need of an annual transplant. This procedure is performed every spring, immediately after Selenitsereus leaves hibernation, but before the beginning of the active growth phase.
When the Queen of the Night reaches five years of age, you can increase the intervals between transplants up to 2-3 years. If you completely stop changing the soil at the cactus, it will deplete it and stop growing completely, and the plant's immunity will significantly weaken.
During each transplant, the old soil must be peeled from the roots. This can be done using silicone tools, so as not to damage the root system, or manually.
Trimming and shaping
Selenitsereus quietly experiences both therapeutic and decorative pruning. Green stems that are already covered in skin can be removed as the gardener wants, so that the plant looks as attractive as possible.
The main thing in circumcising the Queen of the night is not to overdo it with volumes. It is better to remove the shoots in stages so that the cactus does not experience too much stress.
Since Selenitsereus is a weaving plant, support is needed for its formation and healthy growth. If the gardener creates his own rock garden or florarium, you can use another plant instead of it, such as a succulent with a solid stem. Also suitable and special plastic or wooden supports. The growth direction of the cactus is given by plastic puffs, which firmly fix the shoot in the direction that is convenient for the gardener.
There are only two methods of breeding cacti - cuttings and seeds. It is extremely difficult to sow the Queen of the night due to the fact that suitable conditions for seed germination can be created only in a greenhouse.
Selenicereus cutting is much easier. In order to get a healthy baby, you just need to separate the young shoot length of about 15-20 centimeters. Due to the fact that the branches of the Queen of the night are quite long, the loss of such a site does not give the plant a lot of stress.
Rooting cuttings occur immediately in the ground. The soil should be moistened abundantly, after which the baby sinks into it. After 1-2 weeks, the new Selenicereus will have its own roots. All this period the plant needs abundant watering (1 every 3-4 days).
Diseases and pests
The Queen of the Night has a rather strong immunity, so she rarely gets sick. This is usually due to improper care or conditions of detention. The most common problems with Selenicereus are:
- Root rotting. Occurs due to excess moisture or fertilizer.
- Leaf fall. May be caused by lack of water or a sharp temperature drop.
- Withering shoots. Occurs due to a critical lack of moisture, or due to an insufficient amount of nutrients and trace elements in the soil.
- The fall of the petals. Selenitsereus only sheds its flowers if it lacks the necessary strength to maintain them.
There is only one pest that can cause inconvenience to the cactus - the shield (spider mite). In order to cope with it, the plant and the soil need to be treated with insecticides.
Selenicereus is an unusual, eye-catching cactus. It is somewhat difficult to care for due to the characteristics of its shoots, but its extravagant appearance and large beautiful flowers are worth a little tinkering with this plant.
Popular types of cactus are Queen of the Night
Of all the known 24 species, popular with flower growers, only a few cacti are used. More known among them are several types:
- Selenitsereus Grandiflorus large-flowered, leaves of dark green color, easily communicate with each other, are covered with dense skin, can grow up to 10 meters. Peel protects the plant stems from drying out. The buds are quite large in diameter, and there may be several dozen of them on one plant. Therefore, in total, it can bloom for more than one month, with one instance only blooming one night, emitting a pleasant vanilla flavor. Each lash of this cactus has vertical edges, on which are short needles.
- Selenicereus Anthony. The species is distinguished by its flat zigzag stalks. Stems green-blue in width can be up to 15 cm, located on them with short needles. The inflorescence in diameter is slightly smaller than the previous species and is about 20 cm, the flower itself may have petals of several colors.
- Hooked cactus, has bright green round stems with ribs on the surface covered with needles with hooks. Flowers are white or cream-colored with a diameter of twenty centimeters, the tube is extended.
- Mrs. McDonalds Cactus, has a great resemblance to Grandiflora, the only thing that differs in the color of flowers that have a bright orange color.
Cactus Queen of the Night
However, of all the species presented, more attention is paid to the large-flowered selenitsereusu.
White flowers, unique in their beauty, exude a vanilla smell, large in diameter. They are located in large numbers all over the stem, therefore they bloom for a long time in nature, up to several weeks. They bloom at dusk, and continue to bloom for only a few hours, captivating visitors with its incredible beauty.
Despite the beauty of this beautiful exotic flower, it is very rare to be found among lovers of gardeners, because of the widespread belief that it is a pure greenhouse plant. However, this is not at all the case; it is not difficult to grow it, it is enough to create optimal conditions for its development and cool wintering. This light-loving plant, even direct sunlight for it is not a hindrance, is not whimsical in care, grows quickly and once a year pleases the eye with an abundance of beautiful fragrant flowers.
- Selenicereus lighting. When grown at home, the Queen of the Night must be placed on the window from the south side, as it is light and a heat-loving plant. At the stage of its development, the flower can come to terms with diffused lighting, the bright sun is vital for it in the resting stage, and this is essential for the development of a large number of buds and stimulation of flowering. He prefers only natural light, artificial lighting can badly affect budding in some cases, they can crumble.
- Temperature conditions. During the period of active growth and budding, the plant must receive the maximum amount of light and heat so that the flower buds do not crumble, the temperature must be at least 18 degrees. Also detrimental to the buds and the presence of drafts and a sharp change in air temperature, which, the same can lead to the death of the buds. Selenizereusy feel great on the spacious and bright balconies, protected from drafts. With the onset of the winter period from October to March, for cacti, you need to create a temperature regime, which should be from 10 to 12 degrees, and not exceed the permissible limits.
- Watering. Like all cacti, the Queen of the Night does not tolerate over-wetting of the soil, therefore, before starting to water, it is necessary to check the condition of the soil, it should be dry to almost half the capacity. Otherwise, it threatens not only the rotting of the root system, but also the death of the plant. Such a system of watering must be followed in spring and summer, in winter it is practically not necessary to water, only in the event that the plant does not wilt. For irrigation, it is recommended to use soft distilled water.
- Top dressing.
After the cactus blooms, ripe seeds are harvested from the ripe fruits, cleaned from the pulp, dried for several days, and then sown in prepared flat containers, creating a greenhouse effect for this. Daily covering material is removed for half an hour, irrigated planting, and again closed. Approximately in three weeks shoots appear, at the age of two weeks each plant is seated in separate containers.
The shoots are propagated in the spring, the upper lashes are cut into cuttings about ten centimeters, the cutting sites are sprinkled with crushed coal, after they dry out, they are planted in pots with previously prepared soil. At the bottom of the tank there is a drainage, which may be expanded clay or gravel, river sand and sod soil. When caring for cacti, be sure to loosen the soil for better air access to the root system.
In addition to its beautiful decorative features, the cactus has useful properties. The juice obtained from the stems of plants, used for rheumatic and muscle pain, make tincture, which helps with heart pain, improves blood circulation and fills the body with strength and energy.
Selenicereus grandiflora (Selenicereus grandiflorus)
Despite the fact that flowering is quite spectacular in all species of this genus, only one of them is most popular - Selenicereus grandiflora. He has very long climbing shoots. In the wild, these shoots are often tangled in thorny balls. Slightly wavy stems are quite thin, so, their thickness is only 2.5 centimeters. On their faces, of which there are 7 or 8 pieces, there are small areoles with a whitish-gray edge. From each areola grow from 5 to 18 short spines, whose length is 0.5-1.5 centimeters. As the stem matures, these spines die off. The flowers of this cactus are very fragrant and their smell is similar to vanilla. The flower is very large, so, in the open state, its diameter is 30 centimeters. The tube grows up to 22 centimeters. The perianth narrow lanceolate external lobes are painted in pale brown color, they reach 7 to 10 centimeters in length, and 4.5 centimeters in width. Broadly narrow-tip inner lobes slightly shorter than the outer ones. Of these, 2 or 3 not very dense loose layers are formed. At the core is a multitude of yellowish stamens, the length of which is 5 centimeters. When flowering ends, purple egg-shaped fruits are formed. Their length, as a rule, does not exceed 8 centimeters.
This plant has a rather long flowering. So, it can bloom throughout the summer, despite the fragility of the flower (it fades several hours after opening). The fact is that during the flowering at the cactus can grow up to 50 buds.
Selenicereus Anthony (Selenicereus anthonyanus)
This is also a very spectacular view of Selenicereus, but it is not yet in great demand among domestic growers. This cactus is also called in the people "fish bone". This climbing plant has flat, leaf-like and rather fleshy shoots, which are also very wide (up to 15 centimeters). Deeply dissected greenish-blue shoot similar in shape to a leaf of oak or dandelion, while its shares are unpaired-arranged. Of the relatively shallow areoles, 3 short spikes protrude. The diameter of the flower in the open state is 20 centimeters, and the length of the tube is 12 centimeters. Perianth unusual color lobes. So, the color changes smoothly from purple outside to creamy pink inside. The length and shape of these shares are almost the same. The lobes of both the inner and outer parts are almost equal in width. Their length increases smoothly from the center to the edges. There are a lot of them, so the space inside the flower is completely filled. Short yellowish stamens are almost invisible under a large pink-white pistil having a star-shaped stigma.
Selenicereus kruchkovidny (Selenicereus hamatus)
This is also a very spectacular view, but it is very rarely to be found in the collections of gardeners. Saturated green color shoots in length reach 12 meters, they have 4 or 5 edges. On these edges are relatively large hooked spur processes, the length of which is 1 centimeter. Five short (5 millimeters) spines protrude from the areoles, very similar to whitish-yellow stamens. Quite large flowers in the open state have a diameter of 20 centimeters, there is also a long tube - up to 40 centimeters. Quite wide lanceolate perianth lobes, located in the outer part, are painted in a light green color, and those inside are almost oval in shape. The shares are quite tight to each other, while almost completely closing the neighboring ones. Because of this, they form a bowl shape. Light yellow long stamens are mixed with a variety of long processes of pistils (up to 18 pieces).
Types of Selenicereus
Despite the beauty of the flowers of this cactus, only one species found its distribution in the culture - Selenicereus grandiflora (Selenicereus grandiflorus). He has long climbing grayish-green shoots that grow in their natural habitat up to 10 m and are often entangled in thorny tangles. Slightly wavy stems, about 2.5 cm thick, have 7–8 faces, on which small areoles are covered with gray-white “down” and equipped with 5–18 small spines 0.5–1.5 cm long, falling as growing up escape. The flowers are fragrant, with the smell of vanilla. The length of the tube is 22 cm, and the diameter of the open flower is 30 cm. The outer petals of the perianth are narrow-lanceolate, light brown, 7–10 cm long, 4.5 cm wide. loose layer. The core of the flower is decorated with numerous yellow stamens, 5 cm long. After flowering, egg-shaped fruits of purple shades are tied, the sizes of which can reach 8 cm in length.
Despite the fact that the flowering of a single flower of a cactus lasts only a few hours, the cactus itself can bloom throughout the summer, as it can set up to 50 buds per season.
Another equally beautiful and very original look, unfortunately, has not yet found wide distribution in domestic floriculture - Selenicereus Anthony (Selenicereus anthonyanus), popularly called the “Fish Bone”. It is a climbing cactus with leaf-like flat fleshy stems, the width of which can reach 15 cm. The stem itself is bluish-green, deeply dissected, resembling a leaf of a dandelion or oak with oddly arranged lobes. The spikes collected in 3 pieces in small areoles are rather short. Flowers in diameter reach 20 cm, tube - 12 cm. The color of the petals of the perianth smoothly varies from creamy pink inside the flower to purple - outside. Their size and shape are not very different. Both outside and inside, the perianth is almost the same width, but from the center of the flower to its outer side their length increases slightly. At the same time, they almost evenly fill the entire intra-flower space. Yellow short stamens are almost completely hidden under a large white-pink pestle with a star-shaped stigma.
And one more, rather attractive for florists view, however, common even less previous - Selenecereus is hooked (Selenicereus hamatus) with a long, up to 12 m, bright green stem with 4–5 ribs, equipped with large centimeter hooked spurs. Small spines, 5 mm long, sitting on 5 pieces in areolae, look more like yellowish-white bristles. Flowers - large. Their tube reaches 40 cm, and its opening diameter is 20 cm. The outer perianths are lanceolate, wider than in other species, pale green, the inner ones are almost oval. Densely adjoining each other and blocking neighbors, they form a bowl. Stamens are long, pale yellow, mixed with long numerous (up to 18 pcs.) Outgrowths of pistil.
Selenitsereus care at home
The low popularity of this cactus among flower growers is most likely due to the myths about the special conditions that it needs to create for flowering. In fact, this plant is quite unpretentious and requires a minimum from its owners.
Lighting. Like all cacti, selenitsereus needs in bright light and can tolerate direct sunlight. Therefore, in the apartment the best place for him will be the windows of the southern direction.
Temperature. The optimum summer temperature corresponds to the norms of central Russia. In winter, it is desirable to create cooler climatic conditions, up to 15 - 17 ° C, since this period has a period of rest.
It should be borne in mind that selenicereus absolutely does not tolerate drafts and temperature differences. Once in adverse conditions for himself, he quickly drops the buds formed.
Watering. When watering is recommended to focus on the condition of the soil. If it is still wet, you should wait a little longer. It is best to choose a mode of irrigation, in which the earth will have time to dry out at a certain depth. It is impossible to flood a cactus, it can easily rot and die.
For irrigation use well-settled soft water at room temperature. If it is tough, it can be acidified slightly with citric or acetic acid, but so that it doesn’t seem to taste.
Air humidity. Selenicereus has enough moisture in ordinary urban areas, so it does not need spraying. Sometimes you can wash its long stems with warm water to wash away the dust from them.
The soil. The plant requires nourishing air- and permeable soil. For him, ready-made earth mix for cacti and succulents is quite suitable, to which you can add a little fine claydite or broken brick and crushed charcoal (for the prevention of rot).
At the bottom of the pot is required a good drainage layer that prevents the stagnation of water.
Top dressing. The queen of the night is a fast-growing cactus, actively absorbing nutrients from the earth. Therefore, it needs more nutrition than most members of the family. During the growing season, selenitsereus is fed 2 - 3 times a month with universal fertilizers for cacti. From November to March, all feeding is stopped, giving the plant a chance to rest.
Transfer. Young specimens are transplanted annually, in spring, grown-up - after a year, and quite adult, overgrown, as far as possible. But if the cactus grows without a transplant, it is recommended to change the topsoil annually, carefully removing the old soil until the root system is exposed.
Shaping and trimming. Quite long and unattractive shoots can be cut, the cactus is able to recover from damage. But he does not need formative trimming, as it does not contribute to tillering and leaves behind ugly hemp. In addition, if you overdo it with this surgical procedure, the plant can simply be destroyed.
It is best to give the desired shape to selenitsereusu using various rings, supports, ladders, around which you can twist its long thorny stems. But you need to be extremely careful, because the plant is very fragile and breaks easily when you try to bend it.
Breeds This cactus is the seed and prunus-cutting, which is rooted in the spring in a slightly moist substrate.
Diseases and pests. The most common pest of cactus are spider mites and scale insects. When they appear, the plant must be treated with a chemical preparation of the corresponding action.
Of the diseases most often found root rot, which develops as a result of the gulf of cactus.
Selenitsereus - plant description
Selenicereus (Selenicereus) belongs to the family Cactus (Cactaceae) and has about 25 species. Tropical wooded areas of South and Central America are considered its homeland. There is a plant and on the rocks. Unlike most cacti, Selenicereus is an epiphyte - its long (up to 10-12 m), dangling shoots have aerial roots that cling to their forophytes. The diameter of the shoots is small - 1-3 cm, on their surface there are small and not too frequent spines. The structure of the shoots is often ribbed, the color is green, sometimes with a bluish bloom.
Cactus in the flowering period produces many short peduncles. Long buds in shape and color resemble candles. Their maturation lasts 18-20 days. When opening, a large (up to 30 cm) flower of light shades and complex shapes is formed. Its bloom lasts only a few hours, and by the morning it fades.
Cactus got its name precisely because of such an unusual flowering. Selenitsereus comes from the Latin words “selene” and “cereus”, which means “the goddess of the moon”. Also, the flower is called the "Queen of the Night", "Moonlight" or "Snake Cactus" for its long, creeping shoots.
Queen of the night, home care
The Queen of the Night But due to the fact that this is an epiphytic and creeping plant, it is necessary for it to select special places. Often the cactus is grown ampelously. If you put the pot with this crop on the plane, it will be necessary to create supports for thin long stems.
At home, it is not difficult to keep selenicereus, but to achieve its flowering is not so easy.
Despite the fact that the flower has a calm character and is viable, I recommend it to be grown by experienced gardeners and true connoisseurs of exotic cacti.
Selenitsereus is very photophilous. He needs abundant lighting and the direct rays of the sun are not afraid of him. The “Goddess of the Moon” will suit the southern windows and any other places where there is a lot of light and it is permanent.
In the shade, the plant will develop poorly, the stems may become thin and inconspicuous. In winter, it is desirable to create additional artificial lighting for the epiphyte, so that the light day for it should be at least 10 hours.
Cactus came to us from the tropics, so it is well tolerated by the heat. The optimum temperature for it will be in the range of 23-28 ° C. Selenitsereus can easily tolerate higher rates, but he does not like extreme temperature drops and drafts. Room climate is ideal for him, with the conditions that the room is well ventilated.
In order for the cactus to bloom, at rest, in winter, it should be immersed in a cooler environment. Temperatures in the range of 15-17 ° C will be ideal for wintering. But here it is necessary to make sure that the figures do not release below 5 ° C, otherwise the flower will simply freeze and die.
"The Queen of the Night" is undemanding of moisture. The flower feels great with an average level of humidity in the room. Spraying a cactus is not necessary, although it is sometimes necessary to do to brush away the dust from the stalks. Also, occasionally you can wash the bush under water.
Care at home for selenitsereusom simple, but requires attention to watering. From excessive irrigation, the plant quickly begins to rot the roots. Water the cactus so that between the irrigations the top layer of the substrate dries out completely.
In the summer, the frequency of irrigation can be a couple of times a week, in the winter 1-2 times a month. If the flower lives in a warm room, then it will have to be watered a little more often.
For irrigation it is recommended to use warm water, purified from salts. To soften the water from the tap, you can use a little citric acid or vinegar (a couple of drops in a glass of water).
With the beginning of the vegetative period "moxet" it is desirable to feed. Fertilizers suitable complex mineral for cacti and succulents. Top dressing bring not too often, 1-2 times a month. Fertilize the soil of the plant until the rest period - November, early December. Then the feeding is completely stopped and resumed next spring.
Under natural conditions, epiphyte plants live on other organic surfaces — the bark of trees, mosses, and rocks covered with lichens. At the same time, epiphytes are not parasites, but, on the contrary, exchange useful substances with other plants.
At home, it is impossible for the selenicereus to create the same conditions as in nature. It is planted in a normal substrate suitable for cacti and succulents. But at the same time, more drainage material is added to the soil mixture so that the roots receive a lot of oxygen.
Independently prepare the land from a mixture of sod and hardwood in equal parts and the same amount of sand. Drainage in the pot is laid about half of it.
Young bushes transplanted annually. An adult plant can be transplanted 1 time in 3-4 years. This is best done by the method of transshipment, so as not to damage the sensitive roots. To refresh the soil every year it is recommended to add some fresh substrate to the top layer.
Cacti are rarely attacked by pests. Yet occasionally, selenitsereus suffers from such parasites as scale insects, mealy bugs, spider mites. On leafless stalks of a bush it is easy to spot insects.
To get rid of pests will help insecticidal preparations, of which there are now many in flower shops. After processing, the flower must be transplanted into fresh soil.
At high humidity and overflow, the cactus can become infected with fungal infection.
Selenitsereus (Queen of the Night), home care for which we told you, the plant is simple. It is highly appreciated only for the beautiful flowering that lasts only a moment. Contemplation of such a unique natural phenomenon is worth the effort that is spent on caring for the plant. Although it is difficult to call this effort, it is not difficult to grow a “queen of the night”.
There is a belief among the people - those who see this cactus bloom will have good luck all year.
