Vriesia, in my opinion, the most beautiful plant of the bromeliad family. Without detracting from the decorative qualities of the Ghuzman, Ehmea and other members of this family, it is difficult to compete with the luxurious feather of the Vriezia. Although, this is my personal opinion ... But you have to pay for such beauty. And this is not about the cost of Vrieseia, which, by the way, is quite decent, in contrast to the colds such as chlorophytum, zebrins or fittons.

Content temperature

Vriesia loves warmth. But it is warm, heat, it is contraindicated. Increasing the temperature of the content above +27 degrees, can even destroy the plant. The optimum temperature at which vriesia will feel good lies within + 18-22 degrees. Such a temperature can be maintained for it throughout the year, although in winter a brief decrease to + 15-16 degrees is permissible. A lower temperature, even for a very short time, can also lead to the death of the plant.

Vriesia prefers a lot of light, all year round. Places at windows of east and western orientation in summertime will be most acceptable for this houseplant. If a window, for example, is southeast, then it is also suitable for placing vriezii next to it, but in this case a large amount of sun rays may hit. From them, the flower must be protected. In winter, when the sun is less active, the south window is also suitable.

Watering and humidity

In terms of watering, vriesia is no different from other bromeliads. The main watering - in the outlet. But the soil in the pot should also be watered regularly. It should strictly observe the following rules for irrigation of vriezia:

  • When the inflorescence of Vriesia begins to grow, in no case should you pour water into the outlet. It must be dry, otherwise the inflorescence may rot.
  • Water in the outlet should not stagnate. It must be periodically changed (every three days). The easiest way to remove the old water from the outlet with a paper napkin, and then fill it with fresh water.
  • While maintaining the recommended temperature, on average, the regularity of land irrigation in the summer should be three to four times a week.
  • In winter, watering vriezii significantly reduced! When kept in somewhat cooler conditions, watering in the outlet is not performed at all. At normal temperatures, it is possible to fill the outlet of the Vriesia with water, but after 4-5 hours after filling, it is necessary to drain the water (vymakat with a napkin).
  • Watering the soil in a winter variance pot depends mainly on the volume of the pot and the air temperature in the room. On average, it turns out not more than a couple once a week.
  • Water for irrigation of vriezia must be warm — if possible, even a degree or two above room temperature. At the same time it should be soft and does not contain lime. How to prepare water for irrigation (soften it), you can read about irrigation of indoor plants.
  • Water that is glass in the pan, be sure to drain.

Humidity for air should be maintained slightly increased. Spray it regularly. But in order to achieve a greater effect, put the plant pot in a deep pan with wet expanded clay or pebbles (in more detail here).

Classical root dressings for vriezii not apply. The plant is powered not by the roots, but through a rosette and leaves. That is, fertilizers should not be watered the soil in the pot, and spray the plant itself and pour the solution into the outlet. As for the fertilizer of Vriesia, I want to note that in the care of this plant it does not take a particularly important place. Sometimes just one single dressing before flowering. Practice has shown that vriezia responds well to fertilizer for orchids.

Frequent transplants are not necessary for this houseplant. The only exceptions are young, not yet blooming variezii. When they are actively developing and preparing for flowering, you may need a couple of transplants. An adult plant can be kept in one land up to five years. But to allow such an extreme is not desirable. Replace the vriesia every two to three years.

Although, as already mentioned, the root system of this indoor plant plays a minor role in its nutrition, it is better to use the most suitable ground for the Vriesia. You can buy ready-made dough for bromeliads, or you can make a simple mixture yourself, at home. For this To two parts of leafy land is added along one part of turfy land, peat and sand. It is advisable, if possible, to add chopped sphagnum moss (one piece).

Propagation of vriezii

This can be done in two ways. The first - seed propagation of vriesia, growers - amateurs, and especially beginners is used extremely rarely. Even if the care of the vriezeia is perfect, it is extremely difficult to get seeds from it (pineapple is easier to grow and faster). Seeds are commercially available, in most cases - “discarded money”. But if you still managed to get Vriesia from a seed, you can wait until it blooms up to 10 years (!).

But the second way, this is something that is quite suitable for us. Reproduction of vriezii shoots (kids), the most common method among all categories of florist. The mother plant gives shoots after flowering, but as long as they are young, and have not grown their roots, they do not need to be touched. Wait a year, maybe two. Usually, the appendix with roots suitable for transplantation is one-third the size of the mother plant.

For a young plant is best to prepare the soil from the mixture three parts of leafy land, pine bark and sand - one by one.

For the period until the process takes root in a new place, he needs to create special, greenhouse conditions. If there is no special greenhouse or a transparent cap of a suitable size, you can build an improvised greenhouse from the PE package. The temperature during this period is needed somewhat higher than for adult vriezia by several degrees (+ 23-24 degrees). Usually, a maximum of a month is enough for the process to take root and become a young Vriesia. Such a plant blooms in four to five years.

Flowering Vriesia

Usually this period falls on summer time. But if you grew it yourself, it will mainly depend on what time you planted it. If home care for vriezeia was correct, all the rules were followed, then flowering occurs without problems. So it is considered ... But it happens on the contrary, even with all the effort vriesia does not bloom! What then do? There is one proven way to make bromeliads bloom.. This will help ethylene gas, which produce apples during ripening and storage. If you put a couple of apples near the plant, and cover the whole of PE with a package for a couple of weeks, then vriezia should definitely bloom in 2-4 months. But the most common reason why Vriezia does not bloom is the too low temperature of the air before flowering. Usually this reason is easily determined. Although the flowering does not occur, the children begin to grow actively, which is actually not bad either ...

General information

In the genus of culture, there are about two hundred and fifty varieties, many of which due to their bright, unusual inflorescences are grown as indoor plants.

Vriesia got its name in 1843 in honor of Willem de Vries, who studied flora and discovered this type of plant.

As mentioned above, Vriesia began to grow at home due to its decoration, which is noted during the flowering period. However, even after the flowering of bright, spike-shaped inflorescences, the plant does not lose its attractiveness, thanks to the glossy, dark green leaf plates with or without patterns, depending on the variety.

Grow vrieziiu as a home flower, can even a novice gardener, most importantly, comply with all the rules of plant care, and then it will delight with its decorative qualities for more than one year.

Types and varieties

Vriesia Splenriet - grows in tropical forests of South America. It has elongated, xiphoid, light green with dark marble pattern leaf plates, assembled in a funnel outlet. Peduncle reaches a length of 40 centimeters. Inflorescences are red, paniculate. The flowering time of the plant falls in the spring. With good care, it may bloom in the fall.

Vriesia Kilevataya - Brazil is the birthplace of plants. Here it grows both in trees and on the ground. The leaf plates of the plant are long, narrow, dark green, covered with thin scales. The first time culture color is in the middle of summer, and the second - from late autumn to early winter. Vriesia has thin peduncles whose length is up to 30 centimeters. At the end of the peduncle is a flat orange-colored inflorescence with greenish edges.

Vriesia Giant - rosette plants form a dark, leathery, xiphoid leaf plates. Their upper part is covered with a light pattern, and the bottom has a red-lilac shade without stains. Peduncle culture reaches a length of almost two meters. Inflorescences paniculata, yellow. If you grow vriezii this variety at home, then it will not bloom.

Vriesia Astrid - this variety of culture is positioned as a flowering bloom. On one vriezii, immediately appears up to five meter peduncles with bright red buds. The plant blooms at the end of winter and continues to bloom for four months. Leaf culture plates are dark green, glossy, thin, sometimes can curl, forming unusual curls.

Vriesia Era

This plant variety is of medium size. Lanceolate leaf plates form a rosette. They have a light green tint with transverse stripes. Peduncle can grow up to 50 centimeters. Inflorescence vriezii bright red with a subtle scent. The culture blossoms mainly in the summer.

Vriesia Brilliant (Splendens) - grows in the forests of Venezuela. Presented as an epiphyte, and terrestrial forms. The leaf plates are lanceolate, long, rosette, light green with marble specks. Peduncle has a length of up to one meter. Inflorescences spiciform, yellow or white. Culture blooms for the first time in February, and the second in May.

Vriesia Royal - grows a plant in the south of Brazil. It has large, glossy, long, sword-shaped dark green leaf with silver shimmer. The culture has the longest peduncles among the other varieties. They reach two meters. Inflorescences paniculate, yellowish-pink shade with a pleasant aroma.

Vriesia Red - this epiphyte comes from Brazil. The plant has long, lanceolate, glossy leaf plates of a dark green shade. Peduncle reaches a length of up to 50 centimeters, flat, paniculate inflorescences of a red shade with a light aroma appear on its top.

Vriesia Callisto - grows in the wild in Central America and Argentina. It has lanceolate, thin, glossy leaf plates of a light green tint, forming a basal rosette. Peduncle reaches a length of up to thirty centimeters. Flat inflorescences, red tint. Flowering time is at the beginning of summer.

Vriesia Katy Violet

In the wild, the plant grows in Central or South America. The leaf plates are long, leathery, dark green. They form a funnel-shaped outlet from the center of which appears a long peduncle with red-purple paniculate inflorescences. Flowering time is in the middle of winter.

Vriesia Davina - compact variety, obtained by long-term selection. In height, the plant reaches up to 30 centimeters. It has xiphoid, long, leathery, light green leafy plates. Peduncle small, grows from the middle of a leaf outlet. Inflorescences are large, flat, paniculate, red-yellow color.

Vriesia Stream - The homeland of the plant is South and Central America. The leaf plates of this species of Vriesia are xiphoid, long, rigid, bright green. They form a rosette with a funnel in the center, from which grows a long, branched peduncle with flat, paniculate inflorescences of red shade. Culture blooms most often in winter.

Vriesia Alan - This variety differs from the others by a branched bract. Inflorescences are flat, paniculate, of a red tint with creamy ends along the edges. The leaves are dark green, smooth, long, belt-like, forming an outlet with a funnel in the center. Culture can bloom in late winter or spring.

Vriesia home care

Since this crop grows in the tropics in the wild, it loves heat very much, so it is necessary to place the plant pot in a warm room, where temperature indicators will be maintained at 22 to 26 degrees. During the rest period, the temperature must be reduced to 18 degrees. It should be borne in mind that too high a temperature affects the plant detrimental and can lead to its death.

Vriesia is a light-loving flower. In the summer, it should be placed on the east window, protecting it from direct sunlight, otherwise it will lose its decorative effect, and burns may appear on the leaves. In winter, the culture must be moved to the south window so that it does not lack light. However, it can grow in the back of the room, but for this, it needs to provide diffused lighting.

Also important for the flower and humidity. To maintain it at the required level, the plant pot can be lined with moist sphagnum or a pallet with wet claydite can be placed next to it. In addition, the flower must be sprayed with warm, settled water, ensuring that the liquid does not fall on the bract. The easiest way to maintain the desired plant moisture is to install an air humidifier in the room.

Guzmania is also a member of the Bromeliad family. Cultivated with care at home without much hassle, if you follow the rules of farming. All the necessary recommendations can be found in this article.

Watering vriezii

Vriesia needs regular watering and maintaining a constant water level inside the outlet. In the summer the ground in the pot should be constantly wet. If the plant has just thrown out the peduncle, it is not necessary to pour water into the outlet, otherwise it will disappear.

Watering should be carried out three times a week. And every four days, change the water in the outlet, removing the old cotton swab or napkin.

In winter, during the rest period, watering should be reduced to a minimum and water should be watered only when the top layer of the soil dries. If the temperature in the room is low, there should be no water in the outlet, and if it is normal, you can leave it there for several hours a day, after which you need to vymakivat.

Water for watering should be taken soft, room temperature. It can be either rain or sheltered. It should not be lime impurities, otherwise it will begin to appear on the leaves. If water remains in the pan after watering, it should be poured.

Prize for Vriesia

For plants you can use two types of soil. To prepare the first, it is necessary to mix part of the sod, part of the peat, part of the sand and two parts of the leafy ground. To improve its permeability, you need to add crushed sphagnum.

To prepare a second soil mixture, you should combine crushed fern root, moss, bark, part of the sand and three parts of the leaf turf. If it is not possible to prepare the soil on your own, you can purchase it at a flower shop by selecting a soil mixture for plants of the bromeliad family.

Watering, air humidity

Vriesia should not only be watered regularly, but also to maintain a constant level of water in the outlet. In the summer, the soil in the pot should be constantly wet. In this case, do not forget to fill the outlet with water. If the inflorescence is just beginning to grow, there should be no water in the outlet so that it does not rot. Tropical flower in summer watered 3-4 times a week. Every three days you need to change the water in the outlet, cleaning the old napkin. In winter, watering should be reduced. The plant can be watered only when the top layer of the earth dries out, about 1-2 times a week. At low room temperatures, the socket must remain dry. If the room is warm, the water in the outlet can be left for several hours a day.

Water for irrigation should be soft, room temperature. Rain or settled water is suitable for Vriesia. It should not be lime impurities, so that the leaves did not remain limescale. If water is left in the drain pan after irrigation, it must be drained.

Constant humidity is very important for weathering. In order to maintain the necessary moisture, the pot is lined with pieces of moss or is put pebbles or wet claydite into the pan. It is equally important to regularly spray a tropical flower with warm water. When spraying moisture should not fall on the bract. In winter, keep the pot with the plant away from hot batteries. It is necessary to use artificial humidification in the room.

Vriesia does not apply to plants that need to be constantly fertilized.

Young specimens must be replanted every 2 years before flowering. An adult plant is transplanted once every 3-5 years, after it has faded. The soil for a vrieziya has to be friable, air-permeable. The optimal composition of the soil substrate is on one part of peat, sand and sod land and two parts of leafy soil. Chopped sphagnum moss will help improve the quality of the soil mixture. Vriesia fit wide, shallow pots. One third of the pot should be filled with expanded clay or brick chips to provide the plant with good drainage.

Vriesia perforated (Vriesea fenestralis)

The leaves in the rosette are up to 40 cm long and 6–6.5 cm wide, light green, with a large number of dark green veins, transverse and longitudinal stripes, smooth on top, finely topped below, brown-red on top. Inflorescence up to 50 cm tall and 9 cm wide. The flowers are light yellow, bracts in green and dark brown spots.
Brazil. Decorative look. Cultivated in warm greenhouses.

Vriesia Chess (Vriesea gigantea)

The leaves in the socket (towering goblet above the soil surface), short-stick, strong, dark green, on top in light yellow spots, bottom reddish-purple. Inflorescence is a weakly branched panicle, up to 2 m long (panicle 1–1.2 m long.). Petals are wide, bell-shaped, yellow. It grows in tropical rain forests in Brazil. Decorative look. Cultivated in warm greenhouses.

Vriesia major (Vriesea imperialis)

The leaves in the outlet, large, up to 1.5 m long, wide, 10-12 cm wide, green, twisted at the top. Peduncle very strong, densely covered with leaves. The inflorescence is a branched panicle, all branching in dense flowers (35-40 in number). The flowers are large, 15-17 cm long, yellowish-white, bracts red or green. It is found in tropical rain forests in Brazil.

Description of Vriesia

Like most members of the bromeliad family, vriezia has a very recognizable appearance. The first thing the florist will notice is a wide rosette of pointed, linear leaves. Many species have a mottled coloration. Plant sizes can be very different. The length of the leaves varies from 20 to 80 cm. In addition to the leaf outlet, flower growers engaged in the cultivation of Vriezii in the home, interested in its flowering.

Flowers themselves can hardly be called decorative. They are very small, collected in spike-shaped inflorescences and hidden by large bracts. It is their bright color and shape that sometimes cause delusions of beginning flower growers.

A high peduncle growing from the rosette center, decorated with elegant bracts of red, pink, yellow or orange color, gives the flower a unique look for a very long time. When flowering ends, at the base of the outlet appear the beginnings of daughter plants. A little later, when they grow up, they plant the home flower of Vriezia, carefully separating the children.

Amateur flower growers who have long grown Vriesia at home know that this green pet does not cause much trouble. However, its flowering should be expected no earlier than 3-4 years after planting.

Unwillingness to bloom is a characteristic of many bromeliads, such as pineapple. It is good that even at home, plants can be “fooled” by covering the pot with the vriesia bag and placing a couple of apple slices inside. The release of ethylene stimulates the formation of flower buds.

Lighting for growing vriesia at home

Based on the description of Vriesia and analysis of the conditions in which the plant lives in nature, we can conclude that at home the flower needs partial shade, stable warm air, loose, breathable soil and regular watering.

Best of all, the plant will show its beauty in the western or eastern windows. The pot can be put on the window sill entering the north, but here the flower will not be too comfortable in winter.

If vriezii will be in direct sunlight, it is possible:

  • the appearance of burns on the leaves, their twisting or drying,
  • clarification of decorative coloring of foliage,
  • cessation of growth
  • refusal to bloom.

Vriesia is thermophilic. In the summer, she will be comfortable at a temperature of +24 to +28 ° C. In the autumn and winter, when caring for the house, the temperature is maintained between 20–22 ° C. If the air is colder than 18 degrees, the plant loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients. It weakens and may die.

Features of irrigation of vrieziy

Under the canopy of a tropical forest, the air and the ground are never dry. This should be remembered by flower growers who grow Vriesia at home.

The optimum air humidity is 60–80%. The substrate should be moistened as the top layer dries.

In the hot season and in the heated period, the soil dries out especially quickly. Therefore, it is more convenient to put the pot in a low pan filled with wet expanded clay or moisture-absorbing balls from a special gel.

When the room is cold, the plant becomes sensitive to excess moisture. Watering vriezii spend very carefully, be sure to drain the excess water flowing into the pan.

For irrigation use warm distilled water, it is important that moisture does not stagnate in the core of the leaf outlet.

If the house has potted flowers of Vriesia, grown as an epiphyte, on fragments of a tree, they are watered differently. Since there is little soil around the root system, the lower part of the plant is once a week completely immersed in irrigated moisture for 20–30 minutes or sprayed abundantly from a sprayer.

Soil for home flower Vriesia

Different species have no specific requirements for the ground, the main thing is that the soil should be light and structured.

For the planting of young specimens and transplantation of a plant, after the acquisition, ready-made compositions for bromeliads or a mixture based on equal parts will be suitable:

  • leaf and sod land,
  • peeled peat,
  • washed sand
  • chopped softwood bark,
  • sphagnum.

Before planting the substrate is useful to warm in the oven or disinfect in another way. Otherwise, there is a danger of damage to pests and diseases.

Before planting a thick layer of expanded clay is poured at the bottom of the pot. If you do not drain, the roots of a home culture that needs high humidity can rot.

So simple!

The care itself does not present any difficulties, it is enough that the apartment is warm all year round.

  • Vriesia is a reservoir epiphyte with xiphoidal leaves about 20 cm long, assembled in a tight cup-shaped outlet, the center of which must be filled with clean water.
  • The volume of the funnel in natural conditions can reach 5 liters.
  • A peduncle grows from the center, bearing an inflorescence-spike with bright orange, densely arranged bracts, between which small yellow flowers appear that look like pincers of cancer.

Smooth, solid dark malachite leaves are decorated with brown transverse stripes that look like a sailor's vest. The ends of the sheet plates are bent down. Many species are grown precisely because of the beautiful monumental leaves, but some form interesting inflorescences, for example in the form of a candelabrum, striking in their uniqueness and brightness.

Interesting Facts

  • Vriesia does not have traditional roots, instead it has special retaining sprouts that do not take nutrients, but serve only to create a support for the plant, attaching to something.
  • During tropical rainfall, soft rainwater with a variety of litter, washed off the branches, is collected in the center of the bowl and gradually used by the plant for food and drink. Therefore, all the necessary substances come only through the center of the outlet, because in natural conditions it lives on rocks, clinging to them.
  • Like most bromeliads, the mother plant dies after flowering, forming 2-3 small processes, from which new specimens will be obtained later.

Do not rush to cut off the drying out socket until it dries at all. You can simply gradually trim the withered tips. The branches leaving the mother plant bloom no earlier than 2-2.5 years.

How to care for vriesia flower at home

Vriesia Astrid Vriesia hybrid ‘Astrid’ photo Home Care

Vriesia loves light: in good light, the leaves and inflorescences are painted in rich colors. However, from direct sunlight, it should be protected - from this, the leaves become faded from the vriezii. Western or eastern orientation of windows with direct sunlight for a few hours is preferred. In summer, during the heat of the day, the plant is better placed in the shade - this mode contributes to the appearance of buds.

Vriesia is one of the most thermophilic bromelias, it does not tolerate sharp fluctuations in temperature, drafts, and cold. The optimum temperature in the winter is 18-21 degrees, in the summer the vriezia feels comfortable at room temperature. Vriesia needs regular watering throughout the year with soft, settled water.

How to water vriezii?

  • The center of the outlet should always be filled with liquid, except for the period of growth of the bud - otherwise rot will appear.
  • The roots of vriezii are very sensitive to chlorine and fluorine, which are in tap water, because the water is defended before watering for at least a day.
  • In winter (when it is cold), water from a sheet outlet is drained if the temperature in the room has dropped below 20 degrees. Only for a few hours a couple of times a week during the cold season fill the funnel.

The presence of water at low temperatures can lead to the development of fungal diseases. If your house is warm enough in the winter, then just move the pot of Vriezia away from the central heating radiators. When the bud appears, water from the outlet is also poured. It will be enough just to spray the leaves and moisten the substrate.

How to feed vrieziyu

During the period of active growth feed fertilizer for indoor flowers every two weeks.

  • If there is no special fertilizer for bromeliads, you can feed the usual universal, reducing the dose by 2 times.
  • Fertilizers are applied only foliar by adding liquid to the funnel or sprinkling the leaves. Pouring fertilizer at the root does not make sense.
  • Vriesia likes moist air, but spraying can cause whitish stains on the leaves. Therefore, the pot with vriezii set on wet clay or in pots with wet moss.
  • You can periodically bathe the flower, pouring it out of the watering can or under the shower.

Vriesia loves the wet microclimate created by other plants located around. He feels good, looks great in composition with any indoor cultures. Prefers a light breathable peat soil and good drainage. Until the appearance of the inflorescence it is transplanted twice. The transfer pot must be low with a wide upper part, and the volume must correspond to the size of the root system. Ceramic vases are preferable, since the sheet rosette may be bulky and heavy, and the root system is too small and light.

Useful tips:

  • A plastic lightweight container can constantly roll over, better if vriezii grows in a clay pot that is sufficiently resistant.
  • Remember: there must be a drain hole in the bottom of the pot.
  • Substrate for vriezii choose loose and nutritious. You can use the usual land for bromeliads. For epiphytic plants, you can use a mixture of crushed pine bark, sphagnum moss, peat with the addition of charcoal.
  • It is important to remember that Vriezia does not tolerate the transplant, stops in development.

Transplant of vriezii after purchase

If transplantation is still required, for example, immediately after purchase, it is better to transfer the plant into a larger pot, without destroying the old earthy coma.

  • Transplantation is carried out only in the phase of active growth.
  • Vriesia with earthy clod is placed in the center of the new container, and the space between the pot and the plant is filled with a new substrate, slightly tamping with a stick.
  • Dried leaf tips and dead inflorescence are removed.
  • A couple of times a month wipe the leaves with a damp rag or sponge. It has a very beneficial effect on the transplanted flower.

How vreezii transplanted splenriet, look at the video:

The flowering period depends on the time of planting and the appearance of regenerating buds, but usually falls on summer time. The life of Vriezia, like all bromeliads, is very short. It begins with the separation of shoots from the mother plant, and ends with flowering and the formation of new children, the whole cycle is usually 2-3 years. Plants grown from seed, bloom only after 10-15 years.

Purchased plants are often sold on the eve of holidays, as is customary in Europe, and they bloom at any time of the year, and those grown independently begin to adapt to the microclimate of your room and rest at the onset of the cold season, and with the advent of spring they actively increase the vegetative mass and discard flower arrow.

Look closely at your flower, determining its state at the moment, it is easier to decide how to care for it - intensively or take a break. After all, active care during the rest period of your green friend will not lead to anything good. If you keep your pet on a bromeliad tree or on a different support, then twice a month, remove it from the trunk and bathe, immersing it completely in clean, defended water until saturated with moisture, and then return to the place. This procedure removes dust from the leaves, enhancing all processes and improving the condition of the plant.

Seed Vriesia

Seeds of vriezii photo

Vriesia can be propagated by seeds that look like a dandelion. They should be sown on sphagnum, filter paper or cotton pads. Seeds are laid out rarely. Landings are placed in a transparent container with a lid, which is placed on the upper shelves of the kitchen, where it is most warm. The first shoots appear after two weeks. When transplanting, just carefully cut the sprout with a scissors with a root that has grown into paper or cotton, and transfer it into a prepared pot with suitable soil.

It is not necessary to cover the sprout with earth. Make a small depression and plant a sapling. The earth should be constantly wet, and the pot is better to close the glass jar. Flowering will come no earlier than 10 years. To accelerate the flowering of the adult specimen, ethylene stimulation is used - a ripe apple, pear or banana is placed near the outlet for the night. You can put the whole plant in a bag of ripe fruit for a while.

If the leaves dry

If the tips of leaf blades become brownish, dry out, curl, then humidity should be increased at the place of detention.

It is possible to achieve constant sufficient moisture by placing sphagnum moss on top of the soil on the pot. Keep it wet - evaporation will go to the leaves of the flower, thereby increasing the humidity around the plant.

Vriesia has withered and is all over the web

Sometimes spider mites appear on plants. If the leaves wither, there is the presence of a thin cobweb, process the appropriate insecticide. One treatment will not be enough, since the drug acts only on adult pests. In a few days new larvae will appear. Therefore, the processing is repeated no later than 5 days, until they lay new eggs. And best of all to process three times.

Insecticide should be changed with each spraying, because the pests quickly get used to the poison. In addition to the mite, various scale insects and scale insects attack Vriesia. To get rid of them, you should wipe the leaves alternately with soap and alcohol solution. First test the solution. Just moisten a cotton pad with vodka and wipe one leaf. If it has not changed a day later, the whole flower can be processed. If there are spots on the vriezii, dilute the vodka with water and repeat the treatment.

Black vriezii

Another attack is a soot mushroom. It settles on the upper side of the sheet plates in the form of a black sooty film. By itself, it is not dangerous, but photosynthesis is disturbed from plaque, and this leads to a weakening of the plant. A black bloom flower looks unattractive and sloppy. It is easily washed off with plain water. Add some laundry soap to it to fix the result and scare off some parasites.

Usually we bring pests into the house with other green pets, purchasing them in garden centers and shops. Each new plant should create a kind of quarantine, placing it away from your collection. In greenhouses where flowers are grown, the spread of insects is suppressed with various preparations, but they cannot destroy everyone. They with great pleasure will move to your copies. It is better to immediately treat the beginner with a complex preparation.

Another source of infection - bouquets. If a vase with donated roses or chrysanthemums, where there were pests, appears to be close to indoor plants, then certainly in the near future a nursery of pests will appear in your miniature garden. Considering these important points, you can avoid many unpleasant consequences by securing your pets from parasites.

It features a large rosette of leaves covered with a golden mesh pattern, and a scattering of sprays around the edges. Can reach 1.5 m in diameter. Suitable for common areas.

Fertilizer for Vriesia

Vriesia is not a plant that requires constant fertilizing. However, before it begins to bloom, it should be fertilized with orchid dressing.

Fertilizing with water for irrigation does not make sense, since the roots of the plant do not absorb nutrients and do not participate in their transportation to the plant. For this reason, dressing diluted with water can be poured into a sheet rosette or used to spray the flower.

Vriesia seed cultivation

Seed method is quite troublesome, it requires considerable effort from the florist, and also does not always provide an opportunity to get new plants. In addition, one should take into account the fact that young crops grown from seeds will bloom no earlier than seven years after planting.

Before planting seed in a substrate, it must be soaked for two hours in a weak solution of manganese for disinfection and dried. Then you need to take a small container, fill it with the same soil as for adult plants, make small indentations in it and plant seeds in them. Further, they should be watered, covered with polyethylene and put in a warm and bright place.

Every day the container needs to be ventilated and from time to time to moisten the soil with a spray bottle. The first shoots will appear in about two weeks. Young plant to a permanent place of growth must be transplanted after two months after their rooting.

Diseases and pests

All problems with the plant appear only as a result of improper care for him. The most dangerous enemy of the flower is considered bromeliad shieldovka, which settles on the leaf plates and feeds on their juice. To destroy the insect, the leaves of the plant should be wiped with soapy water several times, then treated with the insecticide "Aktellik" according to the instructions on the package.

  • With a strong overmoistening of the soil, sheet plates are covered with fungal bloom, turn black and fade. To prevent this problem, it is necessary to properly water the culture and often ventilate the room where it is located.
  • If leaves fall dry, it means that it lacks moisture and watering must be increased.
  • To avoid brown spots on the leaf plates, the flower must be protected from direct sunlight.
  • Drying and darkening of the tips of the leaves occurs because of too dry air in the room, to fix the problem you need to install a humidifier.
  • When the leaves lose their bright green color and blanching, the plant should be moved to the sunny window-sill, taking care that the light is diffused.

To avoid all the above problems will allow proper care for the culture, timely feeding and creating conditions for it, close to those in which it grows in nature.

Vriesia omens and superstitions

Flower growers believe that vriezia can attract success and good fortune to the house, as well as give it to residents and health and longevity. In addition, culture helps to cope with depression and motivates its owner to conquer new heights in all spheres of life.

It is better to grow a flower for those who are not confident and believe that it needs changes in its life.

In addition to its magical properties, the plant has the properties of a natural filter. It absorbs harmful impurities from the air, cleans it and makes it safe for the inhabitants of the house, especially for allergies.

Conclusion

This extraordinary, exotic flower is quite picky about the conditions of its maintenance, however, if the florist provides him with the necessary microclimate, he will receive a plant in which everything is perfect - from bright flowers to luxurious deciduous mass.

Vriesia semi-shaped (Vriesea psittacina)

The leaves are oblong linear, shortly pointed, broad at the base, entire green. Peduncle bright red. The flowers in the inflorescence are not thick, the calyx is yellow, the corolla is green, the petals are narrow, the bracts are the same length as the calyx, from the bottom are red, the top is orange-yellow. It lives in tropical rain forests in Brazil.

Royal Vriesia (Vriesea regina)

Plants are large. The leaves in the rosette are long and wide, 1-1.2 m long and 15-18 cm wide, grayish-green, glossy, with a slightly folded top. Peduncle 1.7–2 m tall. Inflorescence is a branched panicle (drooping branches). The flowers are white at first, yellowing later, with a pleasant aroma; the bracts are boat-shaped, pink-colored.
It grows in tropical rain forests in Brazil.

Vriesia Sanders (Vriesea saundersii)

South America. Perennial up to 40cm tall. Short, hollow stem. Leathery, shiny, grayish-green, tough leaves, with a purple lower surface and collected in the basal rosette. Yellow, tubular flowers surrounded by bright yellow bracts.

Vriesia keeled (Vriesea carinata Wawra)

It grows in forests of Eastern Brazil. Epiphytic or above ground plant. Leaves about 20 cm long and 2, 5 cm wide form a funnel-shaped outlet, covered on both sides with barely noticeable scales, broad-linear, soft, pale green, without a pattern. Peduncle up to 30 cm tall, straight or drooping, very thin, short and wide with a triangular notch at the apex, few-flowered with a cranked axis. Prisotsvetnye leaves erect, tightly close the axis, narrow, thin with a sharp keel, pinkish with a yellow or yellowish-green top and edge. The flowers are compressed, on short pedicels, yellow, green at the top, up to 6 cm long. It blooms in June-July, again - in November-December.
There are many hybrids. Most of them tend to long flowering.

Vriesia splendens (Vriesia splendens)

An epiphytic or above-ground plant with few tongues (belt-like, wide, with curved edges, pointed or rounded at the top, slightly covered with scales on both sides,) 20-40 cm long leaves, green in color, decorated with transverse (horizontal) purple stripes. The stalk of Vriesia is short, from 30 to 60 cm in height, the leaves form a dense, wide funnel-shaped rosette. Flowers 2.5-5 cm, yellow, collected in a simple spike-shaped, multicolored inflorescences, appear at any time of the year on a flat, ensiform red bract. Most types of vriezii have long flowering periods (up to several months).

Lemon spicate inflorescences effectively contrast with the massive leaves of a motley-striped color with the participation of olive, burgundy, dark green flowers. The leaves are wide, dense, with a slight wax shine, collected in a dense outlet.

Appearance and features

Vriesia is a perennial evergreen epiphytic plant. Depending on the species, the height varies between 40–70 cm. The leaves are belt-shaped, with a sharp end and smooth edges. The surface is glossy, uniform color or with an interesting marble pattern. A rosette shaped like a funnel is formed from the leaves.

Inflorescence - flat spike. Peduncle tall, upright. The flowers are small, surrounded by bracts of different bright colors. Red, terracotta and yellow scales predominate. For the xiphoid shape and the bright colors of Vriezia they gave the nickname of a fiery sword.

It blooms for a long time - more than a month. The main outlet of most varieties of vriezii dies after flowering, leaving behind children. The dead plant is removed, the children are left in the same pot or seated.

Indoor species

About 250 species are known in the wild. More than half of them get along well in apartments. The most common are seven varieties.

  1. Astrid. A distinctive feature - a very long flowering - up to four months. It produces five peduncles up to a meter. Inflorescences are yellow or red. The leaves are light shade, with a smooth surface.
  2. Mix Peduncles high, characterized by branching inflorescences. They harmoniously combine yellow and red hues. Bracts scaly, leaves strong, evenly colored.
  3. Kilevataya. A distinctive feature is a thin bract with a sharp keel at the top and a yellow or green border. Leaves saturated green color, are bent in the form of an arch. Peduncle length - up to half a meter.
  4. Royal Very large, beautiful variety. A distinctive feature - large leaves gray-green shade. Panicle inflorescence: flowers yellow-white, pink bracts.
  5. Holed. It stands out not only beautiful flowering, but also unusual leaves. Their colors are light, the surface is decorated with longitudinal and transverse dark stripes, streaks. On the tip of the leaf stands a reddish-brown edging. Vriesia blooms with yellow flowers with greenish spotted bracts. Inflorescence characteristic of the form - spiciform.
  6. Sanders Leaves are leathery, elliptical, pointed at the ends. The surface is rough. On the underside there are visible spots of purple or brownish shades. Inflorescence is yellow-green, paniculata.
  7. Giant. More known by another name - chess vrieziya. So it was called for the spotty yellow-green colors. The leaves are short, belt-shaped, very dense. The apartment blooms infrequently - grown for the sake of beautiful leaves.

Breeding methods

Long-term cultivation of vriezii in the home requires periodic replacement of old plants with new ones. There is no other way to rejuvenate Vriesia. Used seed and vegetative method of reproduction.

You can sow seeds at any time of the year, but it is better to do this in spring. For sowing, a peat substrate is used. You can add an equal amount of sand to the peat. As capacity use a container with a transparent lid.

The container is half filled with soil, smoothed and moistened with a spray bottle. Seeds are laid out on the surface, sprinkled with a very thin layer of fine sand or peat. The container is closed with a lid, put in a warm, sunny place. Every day the lid is removed for 15 minutes, the soil is moistened with a spray bottle as necessary.

The first shoots appear after two weeks. Shelter immediately removed. Seedlings can be planted after a month when they are strong enough. After transplantation, they carefully monitor the humidity, temporarily remove it to a more shaded place.

Spikes

In the spring, new processes appear near the main outlet of Vriesia. Immediately separate them from the parent plant is not recommended - immature plants may die. They wait three months until the shoots become viable plants, and only then they are separated.

The processes are deposited in a light soil, favorable for full rooting. Peat, turf, pine bark, leaf earth, sand and sphagnum are mixed in equal amounts. After planting, the shoots are watered moderately, covered with a can or polyethylene - in conditions of high humidity rooting will occur faster. After a month and a half, they are transplanted into permanent pots with soil for adult bromeliads.

Florist errors and their consequences

Specific care for variezia - even experienced growers are not insured against mistakes. Improper watering, inadequate water quality, low humidity - each care error has its consequences. All of them are described in detail in the table.

Table - Mistakes in the care of vriesia, their consequences and troubleshooting

Transplantation and other aspects of home care

For the first time a flower is transferred to a new ground immediately after purchase, a plant is transplanted to another time as needed. It is better if this happens in spring, when the growing season is activated, and possible damage will be quickly repaired.

The base of the outlet can not be buried, as well as to allow the pieces of soil to fall into the core. If there are large children on the mother plant at the time of transplantation, they are carefully separated from the outlet and transferred to their pots filled with a light substrate.

After transplantation, vrieseium is fed only after one month using liquid ready-made preparations for bromeliads. Fertilizer is applied on wet soil, not exceeding the recommended dose.

Careful attention to the care of vriezii, you can long enjoy its bright green and original flowering. Although this plant is very resistant, frequent waterlogging, cooling, or improperly selected soil can cause damage to Vriezii diseases and pests, for example, root rot or mealybugs.

Planting and care for vriesia (briefly)

  • Bloom: for several months in February-April or in May-July.
  • Lighting: bright diffused light, light penumbra (eastern or western window sills with shading in summer from 11 to 17 hours).
  • Temperature: 25-30 ˚C in summer, 18-22 ˚C in winter.
  • Watering: watering is carried out in the funnel formed by the leaves - the tank, but if the temperature in the room is below 20 ˚C, the water from the funnel should be poured out. At a lower temperature, water is poured not into the funnel, but into the substrate. In the warm season, the soil in the pot should be slightly wet all the time, in winter you need to allow the top layer of the substrate to dry.
  • Air humidity: increased - 60-70%. It is recommended to spray Vriezii twice a day, but so that water does not fall on the flowers. A potted plant can be kept on a wet pebble tray or in a terrarium.
  • Top dressing: During the growing season once every two weeks as fertilizer for bromeliads or for flowering plants with a reduced nitrogen content. During the rest period, fertilizers are not needed.
  • Rest period: after flowering the rosette dies, and the plant goes into a dormant period.
  • Transfer: young vriezii before the formation of inflorescence transplanted 1-2 times, an adult - once in 3-4 years. Transplantation is carried out in the period of active growth - in spring or summer.
  • Breeding: seed and vegetative - processes.
  • Pests: Mealy and root worms, palm, comb, bromeliads or black scale insects, spider mites.
  • Diseases: root rot, tank rot, soot mushroom.

Vriesia flower - description

Leaf sheaths tightly cover each other, forming a cistern - a reservoir for rainwater, and in some species it reaches a volume of five liters. On the stem, sometimes spike-shaped inflorescence with orange, green, yellow or red bracts, sometimes not more than attractive for several months, sometimes forms more than a meter. The flowering of vriezii is a beautiful sight, but each species blooms in its time. The fruit of vriezii is a box with crested seeds. Indoor vrieseia is represented by species such as brilliant, or flaming, Foster, keeled, as well as their varieties and hybrids.

  • How to care for vriezii.

Since Vriesia loves diffused light and does not tolerate direct rays, window sills facing east or west will be more suitable for it, and in summer time home vriezia needs shading from 11 am to 5 pm because the plants fade in the sun. . Species of vriezii with thin, soft or variegated leaves need more reliable protection from the sun than species with dense leaves, since they can cause burns.

The optimum temperature for seasoning in the summer is 25-30 ºC, and in winter it will be enough for 18-22 ºC, the main thing is that the temperature of the soil in the pot does not fall below 18 ºC.

During the growing season, the indoor flower of Vriezia needs to be fertilized with special fertilizers for bromeliads, but if necessary, fertilizers can be used for decorative flowering plants in half the dose. Choose such supplements in which the nitrogen component is reduced, since the excess nitrogen, as well as the presence of calcium in the soil, is harmful for the impact.

    Transplantation of vriezii.

An adult vriezia is transplanted infrequently, once every three to four years, and the young one will have to be transplanted once or twice before it first forms the inflorescence, and they perform the transplant only during the period of active growth - in spring or summer. Substrate for vriezii prepared from two parts of the sheet, one part of the turf land and added to the soil mixture on one part of the peat and sand. It does not hurt and such an additive as chopped moss. Acceptable option soil mixture from three parts of leafy land with the addition of one part of sand, crushed rhizomes of ferns, sphagnum moss and pine bark. Although you can use and purchase soil for bromeliads. Capacity for vriezii should not be deep, because the roots of the plant are poorly developed. Take a wide bowl, place a layer of expanded clay or small garden gravel on its bottom, then pour a layer of soil, transfer the variezia from the old pot to a new one and add as much soil mixture to leave no voids in the pot. Be careful because the roots of the plant are very fragile.

Effectively looks wooden saw cut or snag, decorated with flowering vriesia. In order to create such a composition, the roots of the plant are wrapped in sphagnum moss and attached to its support with wire or thick nylon thread. On a large dry branch, you can place several varies, along with other epiphytes, so that you can get a bromeliad tree.

    Pests and diseases of vriezii.

Vriesia, like other bromeliads, is sufficiently resistant to diseases, but improper care and non-compliance with the rules of cultivation weaken the plant, and then it can fight a fungal or viral disease. What problems do flower growers face when facing vriezia?

    • - Peduncle and inflorescence rot. This happens when the room is cool and there is too much water in the funnel. A strongly decaying plant can no longer be cured, but try to drain the water from the tank and raise the temperature of the air - perhaps the plant will be able to recover.
    • - The ends of the leaves dry, darken and curl - these are signs of too dry air in the room. It is necessary to spray Vriesia daily or place it on a pallet with wet pebbles. It is possible that there is no water in the outlet either - check. And, by the way, do not forget that the water before irrigation should stand at least for a day.
    • - Light brown spots on the leaves indicate that vriezii received a sunburn. The plant should not be in direct sunlight.
    • - Lag in the growth and development of a sign of hypothermia, excess moisture in the substrate and in the outlet or in insufficient air humidity.
    • - Not so long ago, we were asked what to do if Vriesia has dried flower stalk. Apparently, the flowering has come to an end, and in such cases the vriezia dries, and the rosette of leaves will soon also die. Nothing unusual - a natural biological process. Start growing a new flower from a scion.
    • - If a black soot film forms on the upper side of the leaves and on the shoots of vriezii, it should be removed with a tampon with soapy water, since the deposit of soot fungus disrupts the oxygen supply of the plant cells and inhibits the photosynthesis process, and this can weaken the plant.
    • - Leaves of vriezii turn yellow, dry and curl from the invasion of shield insects - bromeliads, palm, comb or black. The plant begins to lag behind in growth and loses its visual appeal. Get rid of the shields, wiping the leaves with a tampon moistened in a soapy solution or in alcohol, and if there are too many shields, you will have to resort to the treatment of Vriezia Karbofos or Aktellik.
    • - There are problems in vriezii from mealy or root worms. Root pests lay their eggs at the base of the plant, and as a result, vriezii rot. The coexistence of plants with mealybugs leads to a lag in development, loss of decorativeness and the appearance of soot fungus. All visible accumulations of pests need to be removed with a soft tampon dipped in soapy water, cologne or alcohol, and from places where the tampon cannot be reached, the insects are removed with an ear stick. Copes well with Karbofos pests.
    • “Sometimes a thin web appears on the leaves of Vriezia, which is produced by red spider mites settling on the ground parts of the plant. The leaves become transparent, they form spots. The fight against spider mites is carried out in the same way as with scale insects and worms.

If you decide to resort to chemical treatment of vriezeia, make sure that they do not fall into the ground - cover the substrate surface with polyethylene during processing.

    Vriesia keeled (Vriesea carinata)

in nature it grows in the rainforests of eastern Brazil, both as an epiphyte and as a land plant. Soft, broadly linear pale green leaves forming a funnel with a length of up to 20 cm and 5 cm wide on both sides of the plate are covered with almost imperceptible scales. Thin drooping or straight peduncle, reaching a height of 30 cm, crowns a few-flowered, wide and short, almost square inflorescence 4-5 cm long with erect, thin, very narrow, bright red color with a green or yellow top and edges with bracts with a sharp keel. . Yellow flowers with a green top on short legs bloom in June or July. Re-bloom in November-December. In culture, the view from 1866. There are many hybrids of vriezii kelevata, characterized by long flowering,

    Vriese parrot (Vriesea psittacina)

from the same places in Brazil. Its leaves are linear, oblong, entire, pointed, widened at the base. Peduncle bright red color. The flowers have a yellow calyx, a green corolla and narrow petals, the bracts in the lower part are red, the top is yellow-orange.

Types of variegia with variegated leaves:

    Vriesia is brilliant,

or beautiful (Vriesea splendens), or vriesia splenrietgrows in the tropics of Venezuela on trees or in the soil and is a plant with tiger leaves - horizontal purple stripes along a green field. The lengths are broad, belt-like, with curved edges and with a pointed top, the leaves reach 40 cm, they are covered with scales on both sides and gathered into a funnel-shaped outlet, above which the meter-high spike rises. The inflorescence is a simple spike with yellow flowers and red-orange or bright red bracts, which, unlike flowers, remain fresh for a long time - up to two months. For the brightness of the bracts and a large, spectacular inflorescence, brilliant vriesia is called the “fiery sword”. In culture forms are grown with different colors of leaves,

    Giant vriesia (vriesea gigantea),

it is mosaic or chess, a plant from the Brazilian tropics. A rosette of short-dark dark green leaves in light yellow spots on the upper side of the plate and red-lilac on the bottom form a goblet-like outlet. A slightly branched paniculate inflorescence with wide yellow flowers sometimes reaches 2 m in height with a peduncle, however, it is difficult to grow this species in indoor conditions, and it blooms infrequently indoors,

    Vriesia hieroglyphic (Vriesea hieroglyphica)

is a plant reaching a height of one meter. It has a short hollow stem and bright green shiny leaves with a V-shaped pattern of yellow color, reaching a width of 8 and a length of 75 cm. They are arcuately curved and form a basal rosette. Inflorescences of yellow flowers and green bracts rise on peduncles to a height of 50 cm. There are hybrids with bright red or fiery yellow bracts.

In addition to those described, Foster's varieces are grown in culture and large, as well as many hybrids of those species that we have presented to you.
